First Injection - 2nd day of treatment

May 17, 2008 04:38PM - 7 comments

Everything went well. Although I had to watch the Pegassit ‘how to self inject’ because I went 'blank'. Right before my shower last night I had a strong feeling of fear – so much for “feeling nothing”.

I slept through the night – no temperature.  Had a headache and a very yucky taste in mouth this morning. Shortly after breakfast and the Riba –  I got very tired. But once I laid down for an hour or so my energy returned. So of course, I went shopping.

Just took my second Riba for the day (ate a peanut butter/jelly sandwich first) and I feel ok. I’m drinking – lots and lots of cold water w/ lemon and a straw  and it helps - just as everyone has said.

I filled up a ‘gallon’ container last night to make sure I drank enough water today I’m on the last of that now.  I think I have to drink 16 more ounces.
All is well – thank goodness!

Hi there,

I'm to start my med on June 2 and I really am scared of all that I have read on the side effects.  Let me know if you experience any of them.

Thank you,

I'll be watching your progress as well. I'm due for my first injection on May 23 and I am feeling nervous about whats going to happen.

All the best

Hey kitkat 14,

How's things going with you?  My time is getting so near, I'm scared to death.
What does the injections make you feel like during the day, and maybe we should take that one
at night time, is that possible?
Is it true you can't be out in the sunshine?  Souds like a dumbe ? I'm sure, but I'm so much a summer
person, and boy what a time to start treatment,

Hope this finds you well,

to Merlot40... The worst part is the fear and that is manufactured in your mind . Remember everyone is different . I was in your shoes in early April it took me weeks of putting it off . Finely made a commitment to my self to go for my health in the long run and moved the fear aside and started tx. May 7th 2008.
Took Rib with dinner injected before bed and took an ativant to calm my nerves and fears. Slept thru the night . Woke up with a slight headache that went away with breakfast. I felt pretty good for the first 48 hrs.  **** I've had much worse WINE hangovers than any of the side effects so far.
I had a friend of a friend at the time was my only contact with someone who had gone thru tx that I could talk to tell me that the first 48 hrs would be hell !!!! hence stoking my fears after reading the side effects on Tx.
I'm 12 days in now and my advise is the sooner you start the sooner you'll be done and the fear of not knowing will leave and you .  Nothing has come up that was worse than the Fear I let take over that first few weeks before starting. Be strong and take good care of Yourself. Let me know how your doing and I'll do the same .  Jan

Like you, the potential side effects were THE most frightening part of tx. But so far so good.

I really did not experience any significant side effects with my first injection w/ the exception of feeling as if I may be getting a cold. It is suggested you take the injection in the evening and sleep through whatever side effects you may have.
Also - I learned the hard way it’s good to take an easy the day after you take an injection  - I ran around most of Saturday – thinking “oh this is a breeze” by the time I got home I felt very 'yucky'.

As everyone stresses - I drink lots and lots of water throughout the day. I drink 80 oz a day or as close as I can get to that - I’m sure the water makes a difference with the severity or presence of any side effects. Although yesterday I struggled with drinking so much water – but I did – I don’t want to know what happens if I don’t. It was suggested I add Gator Aid because one of the meds messes with your electrolytes.

I'm on day four of the Riba - about a 1/2 hr after I take it I experience 'tingling' on different parts of my body (like I’m Getting Ready to itch) - but that goes away. Saturday night my eyes felt gritty, itchy and dry - Thank Goodness I had purchased 'Systane' (eye drops)  before tx - two drops in each eye took care of it.

I do experience some anxiety after I take the Riba- a small dose of my anxiety/sleep meds takes care of that.

I have noticed the back of my mouth and nose feel itchy when I first take the Riba - that too goes away after awhile.

I love the Aveeno products - they make my skin feel great – whether I itch or not -  (I really like the Skin Relief Shower & Bath Oil) - I'm glad I purchased those products before treatment also.

The orientation nurse strongly cautioned us to stay out of direct sunlight - I believe she said we may 'blister' - she also said to wear a hat if we were out. Although ask your dr or someone on the forum about this.

Please remember Everyone has different experiences with the meds - this is just mine - as you know there are many more on the forum. Janis and Friends also has a category on 'first injections' after I read that I felt a lot more confident (sort of) about taking my first injection.

So far all is well.

Keep the questions coming

I hope you're right, jjhvc, that the worst part of the treatment is the fear in going ahead.  I've been reading a lot of these forums recently and there is an awful lot of gruesome things that can happen evidently.

For now, I'm just counting the days until I start (next Friday).  I will receive my first injection at the doctor's office that afternoon then its home to wait to see what happens.  After that, I will be doing the injections myself on Friday evenings so that I have maximum time to adjust to the shot before I need to go back to work on Monday.

Merlot40, I too am bummed out about having to avoid the sun.  I only learned about that a few days ago.  I'm an avid gardener so this is going to impact what I can do to relax.

Fingers crossed for us all.

Merlot I forgot to mention I listen to meditation cd's midday and at night - they help me a lot. I like all music - can't stand someone talking in my ear. I have a collection of Kelly Howell's cd's. They're ok - not subliminal. Listening to these helps my brain to take a break - for a minute anyway. This works for ME - others folks it may not - perhaps you can find some type of - ‘nothingness’ that may stem your worries for a minute.

Also when I do feel fearful - I put one foot in front of the other ( I least I try) - because if I think too long about what I have to do - I may not go through with it.

For instance, this morning when I had to take my Riba I had to practice that. Despite 'all being well’, I felt fearful - but I 'knew' had to do it - that is if I want to get better.  Anyway, that's my logic in dealing with this.
