Walking may be innate but running isn't - RunSafe

I think a common misunderstanding of running is that running, like walking , is an innate ability and that we don't need to learn how to do it. A lot of running problems stem from this misconception.
I've been a runner for a long time and have raced distances from 4k up to marathons. I've never been thought how to run but then again how hard is it to do; you put one foot in front of the other and the faster you do that the faster you go.

A year ago a good friend went to see a running specialist in Colorado who analyzed his gait, running shoes, etc. and helped him improve his technique and get more appropriate shoes. He loved it and encouraged me to try one. Well I had been having knee and hip pain that had been interfering with my running and so I decided to try it out as nothing else had really helped. I found out that UCSF has a RunSafe program where they analyze your feet, shoes, running form, nutrition etc. so I signed up for it.

I went for it and they spent two hours working on all the different aspects of running. At the end, the two major take aways for me were that I pronate and needed inserts to help correct that and that my left knee made an awkward move towards the right knee during my kick back. I was told that the combination on these two would lead to pain on the outside of my knee and on the hip primarily on the left side. Bingo! They told me what to get for my shoes and what to do for my running and sent me off.

Well it's been a couple of months and it has been incredible. I have been running and the pain is 90% better. I have worked hard on my form during this time and it is paying off. I wish I had done this sooner.

In short, if you run I would strongly recommend having it analyzed. All of us can run but probably few of us run well. his is probably also true of walking but fortunately there the impact and forces are much smaller and so the consequences not as severe.
