Is There A Birth Control Pill that Doesn't Cause Extreme Fatigue,Acne,AND Weight Gain?

May 24, 2008 - 14 comments

I don't know about anyone else, but I have had such a difficult time trying to find the right birth control pill. I need one that doesn't make me tired, cause weight gain, or acne.  It seems like every pill I try-either it helps my acne and makes me hungry and sooooo...... tired.

I am also on Vyvanse for ADHD and that decreases my appetite.  However, I have been on Yaz for a few months, and I swear it reverses all the positive effects of Vyvanse (more energy/decreased appetite) because I am so tired and hungry all the time.

In the past I have tried Lo-Estrin, Nuva-Ring,&  Ortho Tri Cyclen.  Does anyone have any recommendations for the perfect pill--i.e. NO WEIGHT GAIN/APPETITE CHANGES----ACNE-----FATIGUE/TIREDNESS or anything else that has worked out well for them?

Thanks!!!

I was on Yasmin for a while and I saw many negative side effects also.  The DSRP in it is a diarretic, so instead of clearing up my skin, it caused me to be extremely dehydrated.  That resulted in me breaking out even more.  What I suggest is looking into what types of hormones are in each of the oral contraceptives you've taken and work from there.  Avoid other pills that include the same type, and try something new.  I went on Ortho-Novum 7/7/7 and lost about 10 pounds in the first month.  My mother said that happened to her also when she went on it...which I thought was odd because our bodies never react the same.  However, what works for one person may not work for the next.  I've been on about 7 different brands of birth control and I finally found one that my body responds well to.  My skin honestly radiates, I have lost about 30 pounds, and I am up at 6am every morning.
As for the ADD medication.  I'm also on Adderal.  As you take the medication over a longer period of time, your body will adjust to it, and you will start to eat more.  You shouldn't take it based on the fact that it wakes you up and causes you to be less hungry.  They are benefits, but your body will become addicted to it.  Birth control doesn't make you gain weight, it simply causes people to store water more easily.  Maybe try to cut back on how much sodium you take?  And look into taking a vitamin suppliment that provides you with iron, vitamin B12 and B6, zinc...etc.  My doctor put me on a prenatal vitamin to help my fatigue.

If none of that works for you, the only suggestion I have is to consider whether or not you are depressed?  Birth control has a tendency to bring that on, considering the hormones...and that may be it.

Same.
Yasmin
Extreeeeeme Fatigue
Husband ready to kill me
Have had all kinds of tests:
     thyroid--ok
     iron levels--high
Put on anti-depressants.  Prozac...which made me even more tired which I didn't think was possible.
Have changed from prozac to luvox.  Helped but still need 10 - 12 hours of sleep a day to feel 50% normal.
I take vitamins.
I did not decrease my physical activity.  If anything, I increased it.  It's a different kind of tired.  Almost like a drugged affect...not just like "I have been laying around all day not doing anything" tired.

I've noticed over the last few years that there is one week out of the month that I have all kinds of energy...right before and during my period.  I thought this was really strange because that is when I should be tired.

Then, this morning it dawned on me.  My energy is zapped everytime I start taking birth control pills again after my period.  It must be the pills!!!!!!!

Although this was the case ever since I started bc pills 10 years ago, it has been increased 100 fold in the last two years when I switched to Yasmin.

Wow!  vnns!  Your symptoms are EXACTLY like mine!  I'm a group fitness instructor so when I tell people I'm tired they just look at me and roll their eyes and tell me to stop working out so much!  But the problem didn't start until I started taking birth control pills again a little over a month ago.  What I related to so much of what you said was that it's a different kind of tired.  It's more like a drugged effect!  I feel like my legs weigh 100 lbs each and it doesn't matter how much sleep I get (which usually I get 7-8 hrs a night and have PLENTY of energy the next day) I wake up feeling SOOOO tired!  I am a Stay-At-Home mom to a three and four-year old and luckily they still take naps during the day, because I SO look forward to nap time!  We take a two hour nap everyday and I sometimes I think I need it more than them!  And I could really sleep for four hours if I didn't mind them sleeping that long.  I am taking Ortho-Novum.  Everybody keeps mentioning problems with Yasmin and Yaz but it's not just those pills  Thanks for sharing and making me feel like I'm not crazy!

I am a college student working toward getting my BA. I am in a very loving relationship with my boyfriend and I am currently on BCP. But I'm now searching for a better contraceptive method. Being a college student, it is absolutely necessary that I have EVERY ounce of energy possible at ALL times! But with these hormones I am just exhausted ALLLLLL the time. It's extremely frustrating because it's very counterproductive. I am on the pill so that I can be sexually active with my boyfriend, yet I am so tired all the time that many times I opt to not do anything but sleep. It drives him insane! but mainly it drives me insane, aside from the depressed state of mind i'm in all the time, and the excessive weight gain I've experienced (even though I never changed my eating habits), I am so overwhelmingly EXHAUSTED! I want to be involved in school activities and events and parties, but I can't do a thing. I can't think about anything but sleeping more and more. And I know it's the pill because when I'm away from my boyfriend during summertime when we both go back home and I go off the pill, I am back to my normal self! I am now thinking of getting the Copper T (non-hormonal) IUD inserted but I've heard that since I'm only 20 and haven't had children yet, that they may not approve me. I am done with hormones though! I want to feel myself. Is there any advice on other options or feedback on the Copper IUD?? Thanks!

I agree with you all!! I am laying in bed now while typing this. I began Loestrin24Fe almost two months ago and I have been none stop sleepy for almost two months!! I have no energy, my boyfriend is getting fed up with me because all I want to do is lay around and sleep. I cannot even work a full day as I could before because all I can think about is a good nap. IMve just statred having random acne which is completely not normal as well. I want to take birth control but I don't know if I can continue on with the fatigue.... I almost feel depressed and my mood swings are ridiculous!!

OMG now I know!!!  I am so glad to hear that other people feel the same way I did about the energy.  I thought it was me.  I swear I am drugged.  I can't keep my eyes open, my body feels so heavy, no matter how much sleep I get I am ALWAYS TIRED.  I hate the pill.  I am taking myself off of it.  I am only on it to slow/stop my period.  I'm not even on it for birth control because my tubes were cut and burned.  Forget it.  I rather have my heavy period than feel like this everyday.  I am on Kelnor.  I just want my body back.  I didn't have any weight gain but my appetitie is totally shot. Oh and let's not talk about the lack of sex drive.  OMG!  This *****.  No matter what my husband does I just don't feel it.  I am so not in the mood and I haven't reached orgasm since being on this stupid pill.

Just started the pill last week fr the same reasons as justbme.  This *****!  I have wanted to lay down and sleep in the grocery store, at work, in restaurants,  ANYWHERE!  Not to mention I broke into tears this morning because I was so frustrated with the fatigue.  Forget it!  I'm just gonna deal with the periods til I go through menopause(  which hopefully will be soon!)  With my daily schedule, I don't need to be dragging like this!  The thought of having to go down the basement to get the laundry is killing me because my body doesn't want to MOVE!

Most BC pills contain estrogen which binds to thyroid hormone, allowing less of the thyroid hormone to reach your cells.  I suggest you get your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) checked while on the pill.  If it's over 2.5 or so, that could be the cause of the fatigue.  You can then either go off BC or take a small amount of thyroid supplement (Synthroid, for example).  Another suggestion:  Take the pill in the evening.  For me, it seems to have the most tired effect the first twelve hours.  Good luck to you all.

I have just started taking Lo Loestrin for the first time a few weeks ago.  I am so tired i feel like dying and my boobs are so big and achey.  I feel like I am pregnant again.  I have 0 sex drive and promised myself a month of this to make sure I wouldn't just get over these side effects.  I am nearly 40 and am thinking I would probably rather deal with the ovarian cysts and irregular periods than this 24/7.  I thought I was nuts or something glad to know I am not.

I'm so glad I found this! I am on day  2 of being off the pill. I've been on it for 4 years now, yasmin for the past two years. I get 7-10 hours of sleep every night, live a healthy life, eat well work out three days a week and I always tell my husband that I feel 'drugged' like I drag myself around at work and when i get home all i want to do is sleep, and i've always been a very high enery person. and the only time that i feel like i have all my energy is when i stop taking the pill for a week to get my period. I am now going to condoms and spermacide

Sitting in the coach, just laughing like a lunatic person... I have never ever in my entire life have been feeling  more comprehended by someone else like I feel right now. Every symptoms that all of you have been described are part of my  life. I just started again taking Jasmine, apparently because it will help me to stabilize my hormones and reduce my  mood swings and depression...(after having two kids). Now the pill just increase  more "crap" ... At least I know now that I am not crazy. My first approach to fight the depression (along with the pills) was to enrol myself in a health club, but until now I just can't find enough strength to stand up in my SOOOOO HEAVY legs and entire body, even if I just weight 50 kg.  I swear I will go tomorrow to enroll to the YMCA ( regadless how tired I feel and even if I fall asleep in the car) and I will resolve my depression problem with a mix of Zumba class and Yoga class but definitely NO with Jasmine. Thanks to everyone to share your stories.

I just started taking Levora...started my second pill pack this past Sunday.  The first month I took it the first Monday I vomited in the morning, tried eating soup at lunch, vomited that up and felt crappy all the rest of the day.  I did finally get an appetite.  I didn't take the pill that night (Monday), called my doctor Tues morning and told her about the extreme vomiting.  She said I must have a bug because I'm on the lowest level pill there is, and to take it again that night and see what happens.  I took it and didn't feel nauseous the next day.  I figured she was right.  I also felt extremely tired, like I could collapse at any minute, which started that Monday when I was vomiting and lasted pretty much all week.  I chalked it up to the bug.

Well, fast forward to starting my 2nd month's pill pack this past Sunday and I ended up going home early on Monday.  I felt like I would throw up if I ate anything and it took me til about 3 pm that day to even get food down.  I was so exhausted and sleepy I felt like my body had weights on it.  It's Wed and I have stayed home the last 2 days (left early Monday, stayed home Tues and Wed).  This is very concerning to me.  I decided to go on the pill because I have pmdd and the emotional problems I have during the 7 days before starting my period were impacting my life and work.  But now I've traded one issue for another.  Before taking the pill I would need a day or 2 to lie in bed and rest about 2-3 days before starting my period (which I hated because it effected my work).  Now I need a day or 2 after my period when I start my pills.  I'm wondering if I give it another 2 months and see how I'm doing on the 4th month but I'm nervous about next month.  I don't want to miss any work and I'm nervous I will have this extreme fatigue problem again.  It makes me wonder what the pill is doing to my body and whether it's a good trade off or if I should go off of it and just deal with the pmdd.

Wow.- thanks everyone for sharing.  I was trying to figure out what was wrong with me.  I got off the pill for two years trying to get pregnant.  I lost 30lbs my sex drive was through the roof, and I was energetic and happy.  I then started having problems with my period, so I decided to go back on the pill. Loestrin24Fe.  I'm exhausted.  Like drugged exhausted as someone mentioned above.  I have fallen asleep at work, behind the wheel, and just sitting on the couch.   I cannot get enough sleep.  I've stopped working out because I'm so drained by the time I get out of work and my sex drive has ceased to exist. I'm pretty sure that once this full month is over (it will be two months of being back on) if I don't feel a difference I am going to stop taking them.   Thanks again everyone.  I had my suspicions that it was the bc, but now I'm positive it is.
