Failed induction :(

Aug 13, 2014 - 8 comments

So we went into the hospital Sunday night to start my induction. They inverted a balloon catheter overnight. The next morning the Dr said I was about 3 cm. They started pitocin as his head was still very high. The other doctor came in around 11:30 and said I was only 3 at the front of my cervix. At the back I was still just 1 cm. Needless to say, I was devastated! He gave us the option of continuing the induction, possibly until the next day or to go home and see if labor started on its own. We chose option two as option one brought a hifh risk of c section.

So we went home without baby Xavier. I had cramping and contractions the whole night. By 4 in the morning they were 5-7 min apart. We had a Dr's appointment at 9:45 by which time they were 3-5 min apart. The Dr checked me and said I was a full 3cm all the way through and that I might be in early labor. She sent us home with instructions to go strait to L&D if things picked up. By around 2:00 the contractions were 2 min apart and I told DH we should head up. He suggested that I lie down for a little while first and see if they continued before we made the trip. Well, they... stopped almost completely once I laid down. :( They would pick back up if I was walking or sitting on the ball but not as much as they were at the 2:00 point. By bedtime they weren't even timeable and a was able to sleep through the night.

So far today, I've had nothing timeable. We have a second induction scheduled for Friday, my due date. Since I'm starting at at least 3 cm, this time 'should' work.

In the mean time, I'm trying everything I can to get labor to start on its own. I need the baby's head to come down and I need to dilate. I'm eating pineapple, walking as much as I can and BDing as long as I'm not contracting. Any other suggestions are welcome!!

Oh Heather, I am so sorry you had to go through an induction that didn't progress.  Your doctor must feel that Xavier's head WILL fit in the birth canal, if she is letting you go till Friday.  I thought that the baby's head might be too big to fully engage in the pelvis.  It seems like you have a very good doctor, so I would put my trust in her.

I am hoping that you go on your own, so you won't have to go back in on Friday to start induction again.  Sounds like baby Xavier is comfortable just where he is and is in no hurry to see the sunlight.  LOL  I don't mean to sound too personal here, but my doctor told me that BD with orgasm, will help me get going.  I was very overdue with my first one.  I listened to what he said and lo and behold I finally started labor on my own within three hours.  Something about the orgasm and the pressure of the babys' head, got things started.

I was due on March 6th and had him on March 20th.  I know that today's doctor's won't let you go that long, because they now know that the placenta starts to harden when it gets "old."  Since Xavier isn't technically due until the 15th, I am sure that he is fine.  You are doing the right thing about walking, eating pineapple, etc.  Did they say whether the baby's head is well engaged in the pelvis yet?  His head and the pressure ought to help the cervix dilate.

Best of luck to you, sweetheart.  I have faith that everything is going to turn out just fine.  Keeping finger's crossed that little man will come on his own and it will be a quick delivery.  With all those contractions, it's bound to be helping you dilate and thin out.  Big Motherly hugs and love.

His head is actually still really high. That's why they couldn't break my water during the induction. Since there is a lot of amniotic fluid they are worried about the cord prolapsing. So my goal right now is to get his head to come down.

The doctor did mention that one of the reason his head might not be fully engaged is because it's too big to fit. One of the other doctors in the practice thinks that since I'm 5' 7" that it 'shouldn't be an issue to fit even a 9 lb baby.

We'll just have to wait and see!!

Aw Heather I've been waiting on an update not the one I was hoping for, or I'm sure the one u wanted :( I guess he just wants to come on his own terms!! I found bouncing and doing no.8s on my birthing ball helped but I'm not sure how u could get his head down if his head just isn't going to fit :/ aw I hope labour progresses on it's own between now and Fri. Thinking of u xxx

I hope he comes down on his own. I know that induction is really hard on mom and baby! Everything you are doing is great; you might also try acupuncture. Good luck lovely lady; I hope Xavier is on his way very soon!
