A strange thing about sheep is that because of their very make-up it is almost impossible for them to be made to lie down unless four requirements are meet:
         1.  Owing to their timidity , they refuse to lie down unless they are free of fear.
         2.  Because of the social behavior within a flock, sheep will not lie down unless they are free from friction  with
              others of their kind.
         3.   If tormented by flies or parasites, sheep will not lie down.  Only when free of these pests can they relax.
         4.  Lastly, sheep will not lie down as long as they feel in need of finding food.  They must be free from hunger.
It is significant that to be at rest there must be a definite sense of freedom from fear, tension, aggravations, and hunger.  The unique aspect of the picture is that it is only the shepard himself who can provide release from those anxieties.  It all depends upon the diligence of the owner wheter or not his flock is free od disturbing influences.A flock that is restless discontent, always agitated and disturbed never does well. The same is true of people.IN THE CHRISTIANS LIFE , THERE IS NO SUBSTITUE FOR THE KEEN AWARENESSTHAT THE SHEPARD IS NEARBY. THERE IS NOTHING LIKE  CHRIST'S PRESENCE TO DISPEL THE FEAR, THE PANIC, THE TERROR OF THE UNKNOWN.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           When sharing this with my husband he stated; I" I have never seen a sheep laying down is a the fairs."  We talked about when sheep  are at the fair the 4 requirements are met.  Interesting uh?

Very good information.  Makes me think of a book ------A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by Phillip Keller.

I came across this one day & it was thought provoking:

How enviable is the man whom God corrects. Oh, do not despise the chastening of the Lord when you sin. For though he wounds, he binds and heals once again. Job 5:17,18

Someday, I’ll have to ask my Dad if it’s true. He was raised on a sheep ranch in Eastern Montana. The story I am wondering about is one I have heard quite a few times. It involves shepherds and how they discipline wayward sheep.

According to the story, if a lamb has a tendency to wander off or run away, the shepherd will actually break one of its legs. He will then tend the broken leg – put a splint on it and bind it up. Then for several days or weeks while the leg is mending, he will carry the lamb on his shoulder. If the anecdote is true, once the sheep’s leg has healed, it will follow the shepherd, close at his side, the rest of its life. It will never again go astray.

Now, breaking a sheep’s leg is a bit harsh, yet the shepherd knows it is better for the sheep to suffer temporary pain than to wander off into the wilderness and become lamb chops for some hungry wolf.

I remember the Pastor talking about how "dumb" sheep are and how they would drown if left in the water.  There is a reason, sheep were chosen to portray us.  We like sheep have all gone astray.

The shortest prayer is ...BAAAA! for "Help"...Stuart B. shared that with us at church.  My favorite card line is by DaySpring.

One of many "crooked" "fat" sheep,

more on sheep from my perspective..............

Sheep have been the symbol of purity and innocence for many centuries.

Sheep is a spiritual helper who shows us that working in groups can enable us to find solutions to our problems, which opens us up to peace entering our lives.
