very anxious about the upcoming EP visit

Nov 06, 2009 02:41PM - 2 comments

I've scared myself sick. I don't know what to expect on this first visit or what he wants to do. I have already decided I am not for invasive tests and treatments. I don't want any risks involved and this whole thing just has me petrified. My Holter showed fast heart rate which I think was from anxiety but it's the irregular beats that are a problem. I don't understand why these machines pick up fast heart rate but not the irregular "skipped" beats. Can't they tell? I am sure after a skip or abnormal beat, my heart may speed up for a few seconds. I wonder how far they will go to give medication without all these scary tests. I already had the echo and stress tests and the Holter. The echo/stress was fine. Apparently I don't have anything too major even though I am bothered by my palpitations or arrhythmias I have had for 24 years or longer. I am young still so it seems that the doctors would come to an agreement since they are working for me. I don't see why I would need so many tests to check to see where my arrhythmias originate. Just put me on a medication for abnormal beats. It can't hurt me to try.

I can undestand exactly how you feel.  I, too, have a similar problem.  Back in August I woke up with my heart beating fast and felt heart palpitations.  My husband took me to the ER.  They did and EKG, which was normal and blood work.  They said I was low in potassium and gave me two pills.  The cardiologist on staff decided to keep me overnight to monitor my symptoms.  I had bloodwork every two hours (all normal), EKG's all normal and and eco-cardiogram, normal as well.  They had me wear a holter monitor overnight, but did not detect anything.  The doctor on staff gave me a beta blocker and told me to follow up with my internist.  My Doctor did a panel of blood work up for my heart, and all was normal.  He said I think its anxiety and gave me Xanax.  I took the Xanax only a few times and it did settle me down. I decided to make an appointment with a cardiologist.  He gave me and EKG (normal) and a complete physical.  He said he thinks I may have a mitral valve prolapse , but that all and all I am very healthy.  He decided to have me wear a Holter Monitor for two weeks, which I am currently wearing now and will be done as of Monday.  Needless to say, I can't wait to get this damn thing off as I wear it 24 hours a day and only take it off to shower.  Working with this thing is impossible!  I have several heart fluttering or skipped heartbeats while wearing it, so I'm waiting to see my results.  I will keep you posted.  I'm so glad there is someone else that feels the same as I do.  Sometimes, you wonder if you are the only one.  Good Luck!
