My story....

Jun 14, 2008 07:32PM - 6 comments

Firstly, I was diagnosed with PSVT (episodes up to 280bpm) a few years back.  I got pregnant in March of 2006, around 6 months during the pregnancy, I began to have  a burning in my shoulder blades in my back.  It felt mostly on the right, but like fire.  I also had a similar sensation on my right front below my ribcage.  This was pretty much constant throughout the pregnancy.  My BP was 108/65, or around there for most of the pregnancy. I gained 20 lbs in approx. 2 weeks and my BP was borderline hypertension (like 139/???), and I was on Atenelol (only for the last 1-2mths of preg), yet the docs did nothing other than say I should watch what I eat.  I went in to be induced (due to being on the atenelol) a week before my due date. I spent the night in the hospital and then it became an emergency.  I began bleeding out and the docs performed a c-section, and found that well over half of my placenta was torn from my wall, (my son was perfectly healthy).  After all of this, everything seemed fine.  At my 6 week visit, my OB doc noticed my Alkaline Phosphatase level was slightly elevated ).  They monitored it for a few more months, it stayed elevated( now it's within normal limits).    Anyhow, I started getting eczema about 8 months ago (I've always had perfect skin), I also seemed to get a cold sore everytime I turned around (at least once a month), and I started being really tired (my son is a year old, I blamed it on that).  I took naps on my lunch break and everything.  I went in to the doc for tonsillitis, and he thought my thyroid might be a little larger than normal. He sent me for an ultrasound and sure enough I have a slightly enlarged thyroid, with a multinodular pattern and sequelae from an inflammatory process, as well as slightly hypoechoic parenchyma. My tsh was 3.44, and my t4 was .5.  They did an uptake test and it came up overactive (but we all know this can be thrown off by improper diet.).  My doc hasn't done anything productive to help me and I need answers.  I haven't lost ANY weight since 3 weeks postpartum (and I nursed for 8mths).  Also, he looked at my tsh and t4 again, and it was within normal limits (tsh-3.08 and t4-.71) .  My kidney function was down (but I took acyclovir for cold sores prior to the test).  I had an ablation in February of 08, however I have had some minor palpatations and minor episodes since (possibly due to thyroid issue), and I got my tonsils removed in March.  However, my thyroid has since gotten larger ( I feel tightness now when I swallow, and I can see it). Approximately 2 weeks ago, I began feeling much better, and my energy level has picked up some, however I am still wondering why all of this is going on.  I recently was able to get a referral for an Endocrinologist, and am scheduled for July 31, 2008?  When my Primary doc wrote the referral, he said that my thyroglobulin levels were slightly elevated...he never even mentioned this to me.  My TPOab is 317 (norm is less than 35) and my TgAb is 27 (normal is below 20).  I guess I'm still wondering if i'm just being over-reactive for wanting to be seen by a specialist.  I am currently on no medications, and I have no diagnosis, despite the months of being seen. I just don't know what I should do at this point.  Any suggestions will help. Thanks.

I actually developed Hashimoto's disease after my son was born, I think it was 3 months afterwards. I think you should see an endocrinologist just to be sure. I remember feeling lousy, tired and had no energy. First I lost a huge amount of weight, my SVT acted up too (I was dx'd with that before my son was born) and then I gained a large amount back rapidly (nearly 30 lbs in a month!) I was clearly Hashimotos...I am now on synthroid replacement, have been for over 10 years now.

Wow...well, Thank you Sunny.  I have pretty much maintained weight, but I am very paranoid about gaining anything, so if I gain a pound, I will do whatever I can to get back down.  Also, I was finally allowed to make an appointment with an endocrinologist (another month and a half away, but still its a good thing). I also forgot to mention that my thyroglobulin antibody levels were slightly elevated, I don't know how elevated, but my doctor didn't even mention it to ME, he wrote it up in my referral, after the 10th time of requesting to see an endocrinologist. I'm not even completely sure what that means.  So, I guess now I'm a  step in the right direction...hopefully.  Thank you for your help.

I am so glad that you are seeing an endocrinologist! Things should get straightened out with you once you are in his care.....My thyroid antibodies were elevated, which lead to my Hashimoto's diagnosis along with my elevated TSH levels and decreased T3 and T4. I am currently taking 150 mcg of Synthroid and that seems to be doing the trick. They like to keep my TSH at 1 or below with treatment.
Good luck with the endo, keep me updated! Sunny :)

I found out that my TPOAb were 317, and my TgAb were 27, my TgAb QN was 93.4.....I found out that this lab was taken in February and my doctor never even told me about it.  If you don't mind me asking, how high were your levels before they diagnosed you with Hashi's?

The docs looked at my TSH, T4 and T3 levels more than anything as their basis for treating me. I believe that my TSH was in the neighborhood of 35 and my other levels were low so they decided to treat me. They knew it was Hashi's because of the elevated antibodies (as well as my other symptoms and lab values). From what I understand and have read, people with borderline TSH can feel lousy too.....It looks like your T4 is low.
I hope this helps...Sunny :)

Ok, well thank you.  I guess (maybe) I'll find out what's going on when I actually get to see my Endocrinologist.  I faxed him all of my lab work so he can order more labs (if he so desires) before my appt. so we have a little more to go over, as well as a more deffinitive answer for my symptoms and such. We'll see.  I'm just a wee bit impatient at times I guess.  Thanks again.
