Every time you get a cold, notice how it usually starts in the throat with a tickle, a scratch, or a slight cough. It then progresses into chest congestion or travels up into the ears and the sinuses. You’ll have a low grade fever, mild chills, and a runny nose. Even if you start out with a runny nose, eventually, you’ll have throat symptoms later on. Sounds like a classic cold, right? When you see your doctor, throat redness and irritation and swollen glands are noted, confirming even further that you’re in the middle of a standard upper respiratory infection, or the common cold. Typically, it’ll last anywhere from 3-5 days. A small minority will progress into one of the classic complications of a common cold, such as a bronchitis or sinusitis.

Any time I see patients in the office that come in with any of these classic symptoms or one of the more severe complications such as sinusitis, I always ask about the few days or weeks prior to the onset of the throat symptoms. With few exceptions, most of you will have either increased stress (out of the ordinary), a history of eating later than normal, or drinking alcohol later in the evening. Sudden weather fluctuations such as pressure or humidity changes is another common trigger.

If you’re susceptible to sleep-breathing problems at all (most modern humans are to some degree), any degree of inflammation in the throat will cause further swelling, starting up a vicious cycle that brings up more stomach juices into the throat, which causes more obstructed breathing and stomach juice reflux. It’s important to realize that whatever comes up from your stomach includes not only acid, but also bile, digestive enzymes, and bacteria. Even microscopic amounts will cause irritation to your delicate voice box, giving you a scratchy throat, cough or hoarseness. This is why these symptoms are most obvious when you first wake up in the morning.

It’s also been shown that these same stomach juices can then travel down into the lungs or up into the ears of the sinuses. Pepsin, a digestive enzyme, and H. pylori, a common stomach bacteria, have been found in lung and sinus washings. This is also why the ears are usually affected before the sinuses—it’s a direct line from your throat to the eustachian tubes, whereas you have to take right angled turn to reach the sinus passageways in the nose.

You may now be asking, "but what about the fever and the chills?" Any sudden, or abrupt change in your sleep-breathing status can cause an autonomic nervous system imbalance that can bring about these same fevers, hot flashes, chills and sweating.

How does your typical cold start? Please enter your experiences below in the comments box.

Usually for me it starts with a scratchy throat.  This is usually accompanied by or immediately followed by a stuffed up nose.  Then the fever/body aches and tired feeling start.  Pretty much the same thing every time.  I have had the flue and the biggest difference for me is that seemed to start with a fever/body aches/exhaustion.  Very different.  I seem to get 2 bad colds a year...beginning of spring and beginning of winter.

If you gargle or rinse your teeth with 3% hydrogen peroxide it will usually kill any flu viruses but DON'T DRINK IT, as i don't think that the type you buy at the store for $2.00 is consumably I have been doing this for almost 4 years and haven't had the flu, or a cold since then.

Recently I bought this book The one minute cure by Madison Cavanaugh  and there is also another type of Hydrogen Peroxide 35% Food grade  you can drink it but first you have to dilute it in store bought distilled water, it claims to cure almost every disease known, you can buy it at most health foods store for about $20.00 a liter The kind I have is made by Gold Top Organics Super Oxygen.

All I can say that I have a water pik teeth cleaner machine and have pour a once or two in with the water and sprayed my teeth  4 times a week and have never had a cold since.

Something is working.

Alex265,

What you're experiencing is not a cold. It's due to chronic inflammation in your throat and nose. If you snore that much, it's likely that you may have obstructive sleep apnea. You may want to consider seeing a sleep doctor. Patients with Chiari malformations have been shown to be at increased risk for obstructive sleep apnea.

FluDead,

My motto is, if it works, keep doing it. Unfortunately, it won't work for everyone. I've had some patients that are successful with your regimen and many others that don't respond at all. There are various other home remedies to cure common colds such as vitamin C, vitamin D, salt water gargles, etc. Sometimes they work. Sometimes not. People put roasted garlic in their ears for ear pain, when in fact the pain is coming from the jaw. But it still works in some people. Sometimes, the mechanism of action that leads to success is not what you think it is. In general, if you believe it's going to work, it will in many cases. This is what's so incredible about the human body. There's always a mind-body component of healing that most Western practitioners discount.

In many situations, someone with throat pain or scratchiness will be given a Z-Pak antibiotic, "just in case" there's an infections. In the vast majority of cases, there never is an infection. Even if there is an infection, it's viral, and antibiotics won't work. However, many people who are given Z-Pak feel better pretty quickly. The patient and doctor are convinced that it was an infection, and the the antibiotic helped. The actual reasons for the quick response is as follows: Z-Pak or any other antibiotic in this family of medications (azithromycin, clarithromycin, erythromycin) have anti-inflammatoy properties, by stimulating the smooth muscles of the stomach to push the juice down faster into the intestines, making it less likely to come up into the throat. This is why people who respond to Z-Pak do so within 12 to 24 hours, where a true bacterial infection can take 2-3 days to begin to resolve.

My recent bout started weeks ago with a sore in my mouth, then chest congestion and UTI, then ended with up and down fever for a couple of days, very little sleep for weeks.  Never did get sore throat except from trying to cough up the phlegm from my lungs; nor did I get stuffed, runny nose, etc.  Temps up to almost 103 degrees -- not sure what I had, but was miserable.......still have some chest congestion.

My Mom says she's had this cold for about a few months now. Knowing she has COPD/Emphysema. However, we don't know what stage she's currently in.  She does indicate that when she now goes to sleep, it feels as though something is trying to crush her chest to keep her from breathing and she already uses oxygen.  She had to practically sit straight up at night to go to sleep. By the time morning comes, she doesn't know how she ends up lying in a downward position but it happens every night. Antibiotics doesn't seem to help. Does that indicate that she has a lot of fluid buidup in the lungs which are signs of pneumonia or is this a stage of emphysema?

TC721,

Your mother probably has a sleep-breathing problem that's made worse by sleeping on her back, especially when in deep sleep, due to her tongue falling back and with muscle relaxation. Most people naturally turn over onto their sides or stomach. Sitting up also helps. Pneumonia or emphysema are possibilities, but you can also have sleep breathing problems such as obstructive sleep apnea. If her doctor says her lungs are clear, then even more likely a sleep-breathing problem.

I use to get the sore throat first, sniffles and runny nose, then if im too snuffly and cant breeth through my nose it always led to farengitus (sp), if bad enough bronchitus. I grew up on antibiotics as a child with a chronic sore throat but i dont get them unless i can not shift the cold/flu for 10 days or so, then i feel my immune system isn't doing its job and might need some help.

I now seem to get viral infections that set off what apears to be neurological problems, mimicing MS (?), i still feel like i have the flu. A viral infection (oral absess) started this years episode off back in April, it was the worst i've ever had but it was another virus that i picked up in late August that stopped the episode. I feel what ever is happening to my brain is because my immune system is over active, my immune system is attacking my brain until it has something 'real' to attack.

I'm skinny and dont have sleep apnea but i've noticed even though i breeth through my nose (even when sleeping) the air alone irritates the back of my throat when i'm down with a cold or even the flu.

Cheers

supermum_ms,

What you're describing is exactly what I'm writing about. It sounds like you have a sleep-breathing problem, but not at a point where it's called sleep apnea. This is why you probably can't sleep on your back (or prefer not to). Any little inflammation in your nose or throat causes a vicious cycle and this upsets your delicate sleep balance that can lead to to neurologic symptoms. Do you eat late close to bedtime, and do you have cold hands or feet? Do you sleep on your back, side or stomach? Which one of your parents snore? Take a look at my article on upper airway resistance syndrome: http://www.medhelp.org/user_journals/show/42438?personal_page_id=866545.

p.s. It's also important to know that you can be thin, young, and not snore and still have significant sleep apnea.

The past two days my son has really strong smelling urine.  sneezing, coughing watery eyes.  and also little more about him.

My 4 year old son was diagnosed with chiari mailformation just a little over 14 months ago.  First, he did a lot of spitting up when he was an infant and drulled to the point of wetting numerous shirts a day up until year ago, he has gotten a lot better not getting shirts soaked but still drulls. He doesn't speak much, which was my really first concern (besides the spitting up and drulling) at about 1.5 to 2 years of age. He was born with a big head, and his balance is not a smooth as compared to another 4 year old, also he rather run than walk no matter where we are at (have to keep one hand on him at all times).  He sleeps with his eyes slightly open and does a lot of moaning or whinning thourgh out the night.  Since he doesn't talk it is hard to know if his head is hurting or not.  However, he does seem to have high pain tolerance. We just seen the nuerosurgen who spends five minutes with us just to tell me we will keep monitering him come back in a year for another MRI.   This was the second time we saw the neurosurgen, spent about ten minutes total with him in one year.  He does not know my son or even have a slight clue of his development from a infant to now.   What point would a person with chiari malformation need surgery.  Am i just a worried stressed out mother and should trust the neurosurgeon who has only spent 10 minutes with my son  and not seem to care about his overall development.  What should I do.

Hmmm very interesting article, i'm not sure that i would qualify for having sleep-breething problems though. It maybe a chicken and egg conundrum, i would say i'm known for sleeping like a log, even had a car come through the front window and i still didn't wake up, bathroom calls are the only thing that wakes me usually.

To answer your questions:

'Do you eat late close to bedtime',= NO, 3 or 4 hours before usually.

'and do you have cold hands or feet?' = YES and YES, circulation issues of purple feet and hands.

'Do you sleep on your back, side or stomach?' = YES to all, i can sleep anywhere and anyhow without a problem.

'Which one of your parents snore?' = NEITHER.

I snore though, not bad but i've snored since i was a child. Could the breeth-sleep cycle not be secondary to inflamation of the airways, poor circulation or allergy related maybe? My husband is a classic example of your study, now in his mid 40's he's got chronic sleep apnea where as in his earlier years he would of fit UARS perfectly.

Cheers

I started having symptoms of a cold two and a half weeks ago. I have been taking Mucinex DM and when I cough I can get it out of my bronchial tubes.  I am a hairdresser and was exposed to smoke for 40 years though never smoked myself (I am 50 yrs old).  I finally decided Saturday to wear a mask when I spray hairspray and have been trying to rest.  I haven't had a fever and the fluids are clear.  Do I just need to keep up with the fluids?  I really don't think going to the doctor is going to help and frankly, I don't have health insurance.  Just wanted to know if I am doing the right thing.

Cathy2953,

It sounds like you're having sinus congestion, without nasal congestion. It's been shown that most cases of sinus congestion is related to a variation of a migraine, which is why Advil helps, and you also have neck stiffness. Try avoiding anything that can aggravate migraines (chocolates, aged cheeses, red wine, MSG, etc.) and also avoid eating or ingesting alcohol within 3-4 hours of bedtime. Also, don't sleep on your back (you're probably doing this already). If it's not better, you should see an ENT doctor. Good luck.

Ive recently had these same symptoms back in Nov. when I went on a cruise and never took anything for it. Ever since I was little, I've notice Ive always had a problem going to sleep at nights and stay up. Ive recently been taking over-the-counter sleeping pills. Please help me

I need help, please advice. I am not a person who gets sick a lot or gets cold or fever or flu or cough often. In fact this is just one in a long time, maybe a year ago was the last colds I had and didnt have fever or cough. It went away easily.I don't really remember how it all started or when exactly but as far as I can remember, I had a very bad dry cough for 2 weeks (3rd week of January this year i believe and so on to the second week). On the 3rd week of the coughing and waking up with dry throat and nose or sinuses, I was feeling better because the dry cough felt like disappearing but the dryness of the throat, without pain but just felt like I had dry, sticky colds, or snots sticking onto my throat every morning when i wake up went on till recently 1st week of February. It was dry cough that was unproductive, It made me sleepless and felt tred all day and night as a result and my chest sometimes painful when i coughed because it was so dry that when i cough, my stomach and abdomen hurts because of pressure. I didnt have green or yellowish or colored phlegm, but it was watery, white made my throat itchy when I am laying down and about to sleep, as it feels like it is flowing down to my throat. I used vicks vaporub and hot water steam, plus some Chinese tablets and cough syrup, gargled with warm water and salt often when i remember to, and sucked on strepsils and fishermans friend whenever I felt the urge to cough. it all helped I guess. I started to feel better after two weeks like I said. I was ok for a week and stopped all medicines and vicks vaporub steam. i continued suckinig on lozenges because i still coughe but very often then for a week and I was getting better sleep when i suck on lozenges when going to bed. This last weekend, Saturday night, (Feb 5th) my friends came to visit and we went out to bars and partied till morning, I was feeling good so I thought drinking tequila wouldn't hurt as it is very cold here in Tianjin, China now. I don't smoke. i quit smoking in December 2009. for good, i believe. I am 33 yrs old now by the way, female.I also took birth control pills last month, January when my boyfriend and I got together. That is i think the cough started in the middle of the cycle of the birth control pills...is it possible for birth control pills to cause infections or develop allergies? it feels like allergy... anyways, I was out partying drinking beer and had some tequila shots on Saturday, the party was over on Sunday morning at 6 am...i came home with a bad headache and acid reflux. i took 2 ibuprofens 200 mg each and fell asleep for some 4 hours and then I had to get up and go to work. I sing. on that Sunday morning, I had hoarse voice but that was expected because I didnt have enough sleep and was drunk thet night before. I thought after getting sleep and more rest i will start to feel better again. But then on Monday evening, the dry cough started to come back... it started as just one dry cough in an hour or maybe more but on Monday midnight, the dry cough was worse already... coughed every few minutes and started sneezing too... I sucked on lozenges again when I went to bed that night. On Tuesday afternoon, I woke up coughing, itchy throat and sneezing sometimes, white phlegm that was easy to come out, and runny nose. Now it is Wednesday, when I woke up, my whole body was aching...no sign of sore throat but just still coughing and feeling tired for not getting a good sleep because of the dry cough i guess. I also kept drinking a lot of water so I kept waking up to pee last night. Tonight, Wednesday night, I went to work with a dry cough, runny nose and just before midnight, I started to have chills, my whole body felt cold, the body aches got worse and by the end of work, midnight, I had fever... My colleague gave me a full body massage using vicks vaporub, and i took 2 ibuprofens 200 mg each tablet. It all helped i guess because the fever is gone, also I wrapped my self, head to toe in warm clothings. Now, please advice what is this and please advice how to cure it all... as people are starting to worry about me now, and I am worried too... I have been sick like this for almost a month now, although it seemed like I was gonna get better a week ago  but then now it seems like dry cough is back again although there are differences in symptoms. I am just glad that I do not have sore throat because in the past I had sore throat and it is unbearable and can be the worst thing that can happen to a singer. Just the dry cough and the runny nose is my main problem now..i can't sleep coz of the dry cough and the runny nose is making my throat itchy when the watery phlegm flows down to the throat when I lay down. Also, I would just like to mention, the body ahces has disappeared now and the fever feels like gone too. Any help and information you can give would be highly appreciated. Thank you very much!

I started off having a stuffy nose, and being congested, I didn't have a cough or anything. the next week I thought I had shaken my "cold" and woke up with chest congestion and a gross sounding cough. I lost my voice, and I had a sore throat for about five days, and NOW that the sore throat is gone, I still have alittle mucus in my throat and the inside of my ears kinda hurt, and my head hurts when I walk around. It just started today. Is this something I should be worried about, or just a sinus infection? I checked my tonsils and I don't have any white patches on it, and I don't think I've had a fever.

plus I haven't taken any antibiotics, just some theraflu at night, and I started sleeping with my humidifier. Each night I get better, so.. I hope this headache and ear ache goes away.
