Stupid TMJ...

Jun 22, 2008 11:21PM - 0 comments

About 3 years ago, I had mono. I felt such bad pressure in my jaw and in my head. A month later, I was well over mono, but the pressure didn't go away completely. It wasn't as sever as it was when I did have mono, but there was still some uncomfortable feelings.
I got use to it but I noticed about 6 months to a year later, there was loud clicking in my jaw. Well, if I didn't open it all the way, it was grinding and when I did open it, it was a loud click. I messed around with it in class a bit too much, though. My parents thought it wasn't anything serious-and I didn't think it was either-so I didn't bother going to see anyone about it. Soon enough, the clicking turned into "Hey! Hannah can make her jaw pop out of place!". I got it stuck a lot and it was quite odd too see me with my mouth wide open. A little while after that, i had limited use of my jaw.
Now, the left side of my face is swollen and numb. It's almost always in pain or uncomfortable. I only open my mouth, what my doctors say, two fingers instead of three. In other words, instead of opening my mouth about 45-48 mm, I only open it 33 mm. When I get TMJ head aches I ache all over. My left side of my jaw is where I have the slipped disc, so that throbs in pain and travels into my head and the right side of my jaw. Lately, I've been having slight neck and back pains along with it also. I never have before. Randomly, my hands and arms will feel like they've just been hit with a metal baseball bat. A feeling that never goes away is a feeling that a knife is right where the jaw disc is, next to your ear, and it's stuck there and you can't do anything about it. It gets so uncomfortable that it hurts and the pain is so intense I have to stop what I'm doing and wait for it to pass. I have no strong pain killers for it, not that I would want to (I don't like the use of any type of drug). While i have these head aches, I become ridiculously dizzy. My vision starts to blur (I don't wear/need glasses) and I loose most hearing in my left ear. I hear ringing and buzzing all the time in my left ear. I also become ridiculously tired. I almost feel depressed when these head aches happen. I take naps now that it's summer for me. Usually when I wake up from any type of sleep, my jaw feels like it's shifted into another place. Sometimes, my jaw shifts when I'm eating and I'll bite my cheek. My muscles always feel tense, like all I can do is clench them and I've tried massages, but they only work for about 30 seconds. Basically, TMJ is ridiculous and stupid. For anyone who has it or something like it, I feel for you.
