I thought I was post a little story of a kitten that I saw the other day.
The other day I was walking to work, as usual, and I was just reaching the drive way of my office when a baby kitty came out of the weeds from the side of the road and was crying loudly. That cry was heart wrenching and I watched as it ran towards me. Just then one of my co-workers cars pulled out and just dodged the kitten.. it looked like it was confused as where it was going. The thought crossed my mind "Could it be blind?" Then as it came towards me I bent down and picked it up, sure enough, it's eyes were totally sealed with mucus. One eye looked like it had been closed all it's life the way it was swollen. I didn't know exactly if it had a bad disease or something so I was a little hesitant to hug it to me. I held it kind of awkward as I looked it over, then it turned around and sank it's teeth into my finger. It was such a quick bite but it hurt pretty bad. I just shook my finger and kept looking over the kitten. I noticed it's bottom was swollen really bad and it made me sad. I remember a kitten like this that died a short time after. I just took it in the arms and held it up to me, not knowing if it had a disease and not caring if it did. I knew that the way it looked, it didn't have long to live. It was Panting like it was totally dehydrated. As I walked in the door of my office it was limp in my hand. I walked over to my desk and cut a coffee cup in half and placed some water in it, I dip the end of the kittens face in the water and it licked it off, so I held it's face down by the water and it lapped up the water like it hadn't had any for some time. (It was very hot out side that day and I my self could have used a drink so I know the kitten was thirsting.) It began to gain a little strength but from the looks of it's situation I knew it was suffering, it kept licking it's bottom trying to get the crust off. It was such a sad sight. I Cleaned out it's eyes with luke warm salt water the best I could. I didn't know what else to do for it, so I called animal control. I asked him if he would come get the kitten and put it down. He said "Yes I can help you with that, where are you?" So I told him where I worked and He was close by so he came over and got it. He was very kind as he took the kitten.. I suppose he could tell I was a little distraught. Even though it was just a little bit of time I shared with that kitten it is another vivid memory of how much I don't know, and wish I did, about how I can help animals better. When I know more, I will probably look back and wish I could have that kitten back knowing I could help it. But that's ok... after My tears were dry I realized I really didn't know any more and I did the best I could for it. And I am sure it is in a better place anyway, with no more suffering to go through, that is what comforts me. :)
