Delayed Return to Work

Jul 02, 2008 08:20AM - 4 comments

I got a note from our HR person (a friend) at my company asking how I was doing.  I answered that I was coming along well, was off the meds and working on getting my brain going again, feeling just a little pain and am still tired.  I told him that the doctor had told me 6 weeks off work but since I work from home and is not physical that I would be keeping to my return date of this coming Monday but I may need an occasional rest.

Then I got a note from my boss later advising that they had a management meeting and felt that I should keep with my doctor's original suggestion and take 2 more weeks off and they don't want me to return to work until the 21st.  I have to say I had a mixed reaction.  I really didn't want to go back on Monday but was surprised that they pretty much ordered me not to come back (which is illegal).  I am on unemployment (well will be once the bureaucrats get their act together) which is just a pittance in comparison to my normal salary.  This will take a big chunk out of my incoming revenues and save the company a nice bunch too.  I'm sure it is a mixture of caring and cost saving for them but still unnerving.  It also makes you wonder if they are determining if they can do without me.  Oh well, I will just keep my eyes open for other opportunities.  My husband is not working (and that is a whole other story) and feels he has a right to tell me what kind of salary and job I need to take to support our lifestyle.  We will see...

I'm having intense stomach pain.  I tend to think that all the meds weren't too kind to my gut and will have to haul myself back to the doctor and see.  I'm so sick of him just giving me meds - if I have an ulcer problem test me for it!

OK, enough ranting for today.  On a positive note I actually slept good last night.  Hooray!

Hi Trudie,
I can understand your feeling a bit uneasy with your bosses order, in these times it would make anyone feel nervous. Are you able to email him back at all? and see if you can have a say in it at all, or is it just final? I am glad you were finally able to get some rest. hope all works out for you.

I am sorry Trudie, for everything you are going through.  I don't know why they couldn't have just told you to work when you feel like it and take those rests (since you work from home).  I would hope that the company is just concerned about your welfare, but we all know how companies can be.  Can't really comment on your husband since I don't know him or the circumstances, but hopefully, you both are talking all this out and he really isn't telling you what to do.  I would hope that you can discuss all of this and he would be understanding, especially considering all you have gone through.

I am in somewhat of the same situation with work. I work part-time and therefore, I have no benefits.  So no working, no money coming in at all. and I do worry that they will replace me at work. They have said no, my job is safe, but sometimes I worry anyway.

I hope that your stomach pain has gone away. I definitely think you should call your doctor on that, though. You know your body and if it is severe pain, you need to be checked.

Glad you slept though. I would like one of those nights soon too.
Hugs,
Colleen

Let me know if you make it to Windsor any time, we will make a point to get together.  Don't get me started talking about employers.  I believe my immediate supervisor is sincerely concerned for my well being but I work for the State of Michigan and highly doubt that the higher ups share her concern.  On one hand, going back to work makes things seem normal, sort of a numbing effect.  Try to appreciate the time at home, the bills will get paid somehow!!
Love,
Sharon
