Surgery

May 16, 2008 12:00AM - 4 comments

Had surgery on my upper & lower eyelids. Doc gave an rx for percocet. 1 every 6-8 hours. I was allowed to take the meds as needed which is what I did day 1 and day 2 for a total of 5 pills. I threw the rest of them away since my pain was gone on day 3.
That was the 1st time I had to take any narcotic since I quit in 2003. I was a bit scared but told my doc about my history so he wouldn't refill my rx and had my husband hold the meds. They never gave me a "high" feeling, they just eased the pain. It wasn't a very painful surgery anyway, mostly uncomfortable and I was able to get through the rest of the week on plain old tylenol.
I wasn't going to let this set me back to my old ways. I worked to hard to get where I am and if you are sober and need meds for surgery, they don't count against your sober time if you use as directed. Some in AA disagreed with me but my doctor said no way, your not abusing, it doesn't take away from your sober time.
It can be done!! Just make sure that mentally you're in a good place before you have elective surgery.

Am glad you posted this. Im sure we will all be faced with some sort of injury or surgery at one point and will be faced with taking or not taking pain meds.  The difference now is we know what to do if that happens.  I am still just in awe of your clean time!!!!!!  I saw you in youtube too!!!!!  Enjoy your weekend.              sara

Thanks Sara. It was scary knowing I would need narcotics for a couple days even with 5 years sober. But I want people to know it can be done. There are lots of "tricks" you can use to get through it!
I forgot about the video, silly but I love playing with my Webcam-LOL!!
Have a great weekend!

Erin,

That is such a great post. I think some of us are so scared to take anything or pain after addiction but sometimes you have to. And knowing you can do it and you have so much clean time gives me and I'm sure so many others hope.

Thank you for posting that and for being so great on this forum. You are appreciated!
