That's it, I'm staying home from now on!

I'm sitting in the diner i have breakfast in across from the port authority. I've just finished up and am dutifully getting a grocery list from my wife via cell phone when I look across the way and see a man on one of the computers has a Wanted Poster pulled up on his screen.

As he scrolls down, the red bannered "registered sex offender" goes across the screen. He comes to the mugshot and I realize that it's him.

After about 30 seconds of arguing and convincing my wife that I'm really seeing what I' seeing and NOT joking around, she asks if I want to hang up the phone to "deal with it".

I'm taken aback to say the least. I ask her what she expects me to do? I'm not superman, I don't have multi-colored tights under my clothes and a cape in a fanny pack.
She points out I could get a cop.

Which sounds like a good idea, but there's NEVER a cop right there when you need one. So by the time we get back, I'm sure the guy would be gone, thus wasting my and an annoyed (at me) officer's time. Plus, I'm not the "get involved" type. Let others play hero, it's much safer to sit back and applaud their actions.

But that red "Registered Sex Offender" flashes by again, so I sigh and tell her I'll call her back.

Outside, of course, there are no police in sight on a block notorious for police presence. So grumbling in annoyance, I walk down the block.
At the corner I see two Traffic Officers in a vehicle. Happy at my good fortune, I run over, indicate they roll down the window, and explain the situation.
They respond "Call 911." and drive away.

I blink in astonishment. The side of the car did say "Police" on it, even if proceeded by "traffic". I suppose they only arrest rapists in the act of running a red light.
So I try again. Run into the Port Authority where a cop is diligently protecting the innocent...while conversing on his cell phone.

He looks annoyed at the interruption, but as I explain the situation, I see him slowly hang up as he weighs the possibility I'm telling the truth or just some nut.
I shrug, it's a question I can't even answer.

So he says he'll go check it out. Watching from a safe distance, I see him go inside the diner. A few minutes later he comes out with the man in handcuffs, meeting two other officers who just showed up.

I think I'll stay inside more often. I don't think my heart can take the continuing strangeness that keeps rudely shoving its way into my life.

You know in your heart you did the right thing. If more people would get involved, maybe that would put the fear in the offender and not the general public. Keep doing the right thing! Salute to you!!! I can appreciate and respect someone like you, but not someone who will go out of their way to be a ROYAL???????and do the wrong thing like the offender. We need more like YOU!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

Heh heh... thanks. I'm still a little startled by the whole affair. I've had an unusual run of luck lately, and i've decided to classify this in the "good" section. most people's comments seem to be on the colossal stupidity of the average criminal. I can just picture the look on his face when the cop came in and looked over his shoulder at the screen and said "Nice Mugshot." :)

I decided to buy a lotto ticket, but I don't think it's that kind of luck. :(

I can appreciate what you did in a way that some others can't (I won't go into details). I understand the frustration envolved. You deserve an extra chocolate puddin' pie for what you did.

what happened to the days when you could just hide behind your newspaper and bask in the sunshine? ahhh, the bliss of enjoying alone time, people watching, petting cute dogs, pitching food to pigeons....minding your own business happily whistling at lifes good fortune. hehehe...i would have loved to have seen the look on your face as your insides argued vehemently with your common sense....you did the right thing, freaked you out but you made someones life much easier. now, those days of enjoying alone time will be accompanied by looking over your shoulder, patting your fanny pack for your tights, muscles tensed waiting for the batlight to engage. oh the life of a hero cannot be underrated. well done, my friend. i am sure many people will be spared by your misfortune and bravery.

Hey, you must be following me around! How else would you know i'm obsessing in just that way? My wife had to tell me to stop obsessing, I keep tapping my pockets making sure everything is still there.

She said it looks a bit obscene and I should be sure not to do it while walking about the west Village, especially on the weekend. :)
