Here's a little secret... shares yours!

Jul 09, 2008 10:32AM - 21 comments

So I'm cleaning, in the middle of checking on here and responding to posts, and I thought we could share a cleaning tip! I have a very unique one that I want to share, given to me by women who cleaned homes for a living.

1). Use NEWSPAPER, instead of a cloth or paper towel, to clean glass and windows, with your window cleaner (Windex or whatever). It will not leave streaks or little pieces of paper towel fuzz on the glass. PLUS you're recycling the newspaper by putting it to great use. Simply spray your window cleaner, and wipe with the newspaper.

You're turn! Would love to hear about other peoples' cleaning tips.

Here is my nifty little  cleaning tip:
Instead of windex use WHITE VINEGAR & WATER

Here is something I recently discovered...
When you buy a roll of aluminum foil, to keep it from coming out of the box
there are tabs that you push in that will hold the roll in place!  I'm 48 yrs. old
& never knew this!  Nor did my mom or anyone else I know.  Go ahead you know
you wanna run to the kitchen and try it
Happy cleaning...

OK..OK..I knew about the newspapers and I knew about the white vinegar & water but this stupid person still cannot find the tabs that hold the foil in place....oh I can find the one that closes it .....but I am lost with the tabs to hold them in place. You will not see me run an helpful hints forum....I am no Heloise!!!!  Tuck

I can't wait to share the foil one (yes - I checked! and giggled while I punched them in) AND - Saran Wrap has them too - How many times did that li'l sucker get away from me? I'm soon to be 54 - folks are still with us, can't wait to see if mom knows this!

Mr Clean Magic Erasers!
Bestest use - coffee/tea stains - in pots, on stainless steel, porcelain and tiles. Once you discover how well it works for that...
I will say no more than just...go get them!

Hope this is okay. Here is a cleaning tip for the body! [when you're all done cleaning the house maybe?]:
Mix sea salt (pet store, by aquariums) and baby oil in an old cool whip tub or whatever. Just rub all over, rinse and pat dry (especially good for heels and elbows). It exfoliates and moisturizes all in one!

Thanks for the vinegar and water tip!!! That'll also save some moolah. I love when a tip has multi-purposes (like recycling, saving money, etc.).

I knew about the tabs on the aluminum foil. But I took culinary courses, worked in kitchens, and so a lot of those little tidbits were shared.

Ooh, I love the salt and baby oil tip!!! I'll have to try that because, afterall, it is flipflop season!

Well, mine is a kid-cleaning tip:

Peanut Butter takes chewing gum out of hair when it gets stuck!

Of course be sure your child has no peanut allergies first!

I want to help!  :)

We ALL know Febreeze is SUPER expensive.  So...I have a spray bottle that has 1-2 oz of my favorite fabric softener...then i fill up the rest with water.

VOILA!  It is AMAZING!

We have hard water/lime/iron that seems to 'stain' our toilets...I have tried every chemical product under the sun and just recently bought a 'bathroom stone' from walmart...it is a pumice stone that is very fine and safe on porcelain and grout but scours off those nasty stains that our water leaves!!!!!!!!  It was cheap ( 2 or 3 bucks, I forget) and lasted quite some time!  Bonus, no harsh chemicals that you have to breathe or touch and all natural =)

Here is a tip for cleaning wood floors fast...get a squeegee that is the size of a broom...take an old towel not a heavy one....fill sink or bucket with murphys oil and water ...put the towel in and wring out...put on the bottom of the squeegee... mop away .....rinse the towel out as often as you need...

Here's a cooking tip that I finally figured out myself after years of burned fingers.  Every potato salad recipe I've ever seen says to boil the spuds whole, cool them off, and then peel and chop.  I never have the time to wait for them to cool, and peeling a cooked potato is nothing short of a massacre - in my hands anyway.  :-)

Now I just peel and chop the spuds first, and steam the pieces in a steamer basket about 20 to 25 minutes.  The chopped spuds retain their shape and don't get waterlogged or mushy either.  If I'm feeling particularly lazy, I just use new potatoes and don't bother to peel them.  Lots of nutrients in the peel, and I like the taste too.

I have a little cleaning tip that works great during the flu season, or anytime really! (Got it from my mom!) To keep germs and bacteria away, use rubbing alcohol to clean all door knobs and places where people touch a lot! I use it in my bathroom every week....I am a clean freak! I just put it a spray bottle...and clean clean clean!! I love it for the door knobs expecially.

sweetangel7.....I am going to look for that "bathroom stone". My toilet has such a horrible stain since our water is pretty hard as well. Sounds great....I hope it works! I have tried everything under the sun!! =)

let's see...we bought new microfiber furniture last weekend, and even thought its chocolate brown, the guy showed us how to clean it by writing my FULL NAME in black perm marker! then, he used rubbing alcohol and a rag, and it came up in SECONDS!!!!! and on the newer microfiber, it doesn't discolor or leave that "rough" in the fabric either!!! goo bi-rite furniture guy!!!!!  (of course, his wife might have shown him that!)
thought that'd help those of us whose cushions are not removeable, or just have those 1-3 stains that are small !!!!!

by jesslee83, Jul 17, 2008 10:56PM
oh my bad, he wrote on a SNOW WHITE colored microfiber!!!

by chantal21, Jul 17, 2008 11:20PM
jesslee83...had no idea rubbing alcohol could work on that! How cool! I will have to remember that!

AMEN to the pumice stone for hard water rings!!! I actually had one in my cleaning cupboard that my grandma had given me. I seriously had it for like 6 YEARS. Meanwhile, I am using Lime Away, CLR, this sandy cleaner paste stuff, those green scrubby pads, and more-- to try to get the hard water rings off my toilet bowls. Last week I just thought, I'm gonna try that stone thing. I couldn't BELIEVE it!! It came off so easily and like someone else said--no chemicals, harsh smells. It also does NOT scratch the porcelain--although when you see it you might think it would. It's seriously like a stone. But it doesn't!!  I am mad I didn't try it sooner!

Okay I have a swiffer and a swiffer wetjet, which I love since I have hardwood floors in my entire house. I hate mopping. But instead of buying EXPENSIVE refills, I just attach cleaning rags to the Swiffers and swiff away. I even bought a microfiber one for the dry Swiffer.

Okay, I'm loving the fabric softener idea (I think Febreeze STINKS)!!! I LOVE THE SMELL OF FRESH LAUNDRY!

I was using those scented oil pluggins but they're like $5 apiece. That's way too much!

chantal, I love your idea of putting rubbing alcohol in a squirt bottle! GENIUS!

I had to run check my foil too :)
The hard water stains can be eliminated with hydrochloric acid too and its easy spray wipe and its gone. Snobowl is what I used when we had sulfur water from our well also rust gone its in a brown bottle at walmart close to laundry stuff will get rid of hard water stains on sinks , tubs, toilets and even safe to use on clothes. Our water in Ala was so stinky and stained everything I had to find these things.
If you have rings from glasses on your tables mayo works great this is my Mother in laws.
I always bake my taters in the microwave and then peel them with new rubber gloves while hot, the rubber takes the hot peelings right off.

Oh I forgot one, my floors have little grooves in the tile and with kids well you know so I took three magic erasers and hot glued them to a mop and it gets my floor sparkling clean!

by sandee1818, Jul 18, 2008 12:46AM
The magic eraser works great for the oil soap on my hardwood floors too!

i know this is a little late, but on the sea salt and baby oil thing, i do the same thing, but with "sugar in the raw"....the salt can sting if you do it on freshly shaven legs or sensitive skin!!
