There is a conflict between the way we assume that we are free separate agents within the world and the way we act (or react) as products of a conditioned and deterministic universe, which becomes a battle to relieve anxiety and achieve better ends. Basic Goodness spiritual therapy helps people to understand that by participating in this battle, we merely reinforce our flawed view of the world.
Richard Morrissey suggests that the way to find lasting relief is to is to look within, rather than trying to find the answer in the 'other'. The therapy aims to help people to re-discover their innate capacity to live fully and mindfully, dealing skilfully with whatever problems that occur. Negative feelings are manifestations of the energy of basic goodness, so the problem lies in the feelings, emotions and habits we attach to this energy, not the energy itself.
The author gives examples of how he has helped people to uncover this truth about themselves – that we all have this innate energy and, so, are capable of leading a meaningful life without suffering. It is not through other means that we achieve this (this can, in fact, provide support for the perception that we are depressed, lonely or sad), but through the recognition of our own perfection. This is something that we are already, but that has been obscured. The author suggests that, when we completely surrender and stay with our painful feelings, without running away from them, we can experience release. By staying with our feelings, we have the opportunity to glimpse a gap in the pain – our perfection. The energy from a negative event can be turned into compassionate energy, with is a manifestation of our basic goodness.
Basic Goodness spiritual therapy gives us freedom, as it gives us the ability to face things as they are and to be open to life as it is. It allows us to experience love fully and unconditionally, without expecting something in return.
