HELP my heart is racing at 120 beats per minute  is there anything I can do?!

SO i was in the middle of  a class (science) not nervous or anything but then I didn't feel so well and I went to the nurse. She asked me what was wrong and I told her that my stomach (not tummy) was sort of quesy and I felt like my heart was racing. SO she took my wrist and counted my heart beats and came to that my heart was going 120 per minute, and there I am being calm ( don't know why becasue I felt sort of scared ). She lets me lay down for about 15 minutes and then checks up on me again and it's still the same rate. I went to the doctors that night and now I'm going to have an EKG done. THOUGH I was really hoping she'd have an answer. I have never had this happen before so I was wondering if someone here might be able to help me understand what the heck is going on.

The EKG should be able to tell the doctor what type of heart rhythm you are in if your heart is still beating that fast at the time of the test. If your heart has slowed to normal at the time of the EKG, then it probably won't show much. The doc will probably draw labs to see if there are health issues that might be causing your fast heart rhythm (such as thyroid problems). There really are alot of reasons why someone's heart would race like yours is what I am saying, so the doc will want to look at all of the different causes. Please update with what the doc says to you, that way I could help more. Sorry I am so vague...Sunny

thats the dumbest advice i have heard in a long time.

tally_la - unless you have an exceptional doctor there is a fairly high risk that they are going to address a symptom instead of a cause.  try this first: sit quietly for a minute and take yourself back to the place ( in your body, in your memory ) where you felt what you felt in class that day. when you are close to that experience and starting to feel it have an effect on you, ask yourself what was going on in your mind and body at that moment ? where had you come from just then ? who was around you ? our bodies are attuned to our environment - super simple. innately tuned to what's around us even if our minds are not taking the call. so being back there might reveal something that triggered your state.

a quick note:

the best way to do this kind of work is with your wise local pro. if any of your friends or family know of a good counsellor ( soul juggler, head shrinker, mystic mechanic ) you might want to spend some time with them. some of the more holistic types of body work or even movement work would understand this process as well.

to be honest - it probably wont be a comfortable process and challenging stuff can come up, thats why that note above is important. think about it - if its stuff that makes your body go into a really heightened state then it it must be receiving some sort of information. our bodies have a logic of their own and i think its safe to trust it. so starting there would probably make sense for you. plus you skip the risk of being prescribed away from getting better by a well-intentioned but not particularly 'big picture' kind of MD. but if this doesnt yield any useful knowledge then give your MD a whirl.
