Breast Cancer Survivor

Jul 16, 2008 10:47PM - 4 comments

Hi, I have a strong family history of breast cancer, including: my mother which passed in 1981, due to breast cancer, 2 sisters that are survivors, and I also have had 3 aunts that died from breast cancer.  I was diagnosed with DCIS in my left breast in Oct. 07.  The surgeon reccommeded I have a bilateral mastectomy, due to the strong family history, which I had done in Nov. 07.  At the same time I had tissue expanders placed in the breast cavities to have emplants.  I went through bi-weekly injections of saline over a period of several months.  I then had silicone emplants done in April 08.  I had an opening appear over the nipple area, on my right breast, which my plastic surgeon knew about, but sent me back to work with no restrictions.  After the second day of work, the tissue was necrotic, which resulted in an opening, that got big enough, you could actually see the emplant inside.  My plastic surgeon had to remove the emplant, and really butchered me up!  She cut out so much tissue, that now, I can not have another emplant put in, so; I have one emplant in my left side - unfinished, meaning no nipple.  My right side looks like I am mutilated, very ugly!  I have been going through physical therapy 2 x week, which is even making my right side look more deformed, because the muscle is trying to form around the scar tissue.  I recently had a bilateral oophorectomy with my tubes removed as well as a preventive measure for ovarian cancer, which I also have a family history of.  I am having a terrible time recuperating.  This surgery was just performed on 7/14/08.  This makes the 4th surgery in 8 months.  I have another appointment with a plastic surgeon on 7/31 to see if she can remove any of the scar tissue.  In addition to all this, I also have been diagnosed with fybromyagia, 2 pertruding discs in my c6 and c7, and arithritis in my spine.  I am only 45, but feel a lot older, due to all this.  I am still thankful to God, that I am cancer free.  If I can be of help to anyone, I would gladly oblige.  I love this site, as I find it very helpful reading all the comments as well as informative.  If anyone lives in the Cincinnati Ohio area, I would not reccommend going the plastic surgeon I went to, and I will share her name if someone would like to know.  In addition to all this, I am now going through marital problems.  I sometimes think I am going to lose it, but I keep my faith in the Good Lord, and He sees me through.  My prayers go out to everyone on this site, and I pray daily for everyone!  Good luck to you all, and God Bless!

How generous of you to want to help others! I'm glad you are cancer free now. Is there anything you could perhaps tell me how I could best help my friend who was just diagnosed with breast cancer?

Do you know what kind, or what stage she is in?  I have learned to keep a positive attitude and outlook on life, it really makes a difference.  Breast cancer can be cured if caught in time.  There has been such an advancement is the therapies and techniques today.  It is not a death sentence when diagnosed, the main thing is detection in early stages.  Make sure she knows you are there for her, and always ready to listen to her concerns, she will be very happy to have a friend to listen to her and it is important for her not to feel alone.  Try to help her stay positive and think positive.  When she feels down, just try to pick her up by taking her mind off of her worries.

Hi!  My mother in law was recently dx'd w/ breast cancer. I am not sure of the type, but she is in stage 3 I believe.  They had to remove some of her lymphnodes before they started her chemo.  She was going to chemo once every three weeks, now they upped it to once every four weeks.  I don't know if that is good or bad.  She had a lump under her breast, when they went to biopsy it the whole thing came out (before the official dx).  So they are saying that her prognosis is good.

Thank you for sharing your story.  It does give those who are "living' it hope that cancer isn't always a death sentence.

God Bless you and yours

Alley
