My four year old son is very emotional. He gets scared very easily, stressed very easily, and it breaks my heart. He does get scared of the dark and often comes to our room at night and I have to go and sleep with him
in his bed until he goes back to sleep. Yesterday my wife told him that if he wakes up at night to stay in his bed and go back to sleep. When I was putting him to sleep I noticed he was crying in his bed and it broke my heart. I woke up at 3am thinking about him and waiting for him to come to our room. It's now 4am and he still hasn't come.

my spouse also woke up overnight at 3am from our son's coughing, and couldn't sleep since then from laying in bed worrying and thinking about him.  we're going to the clinic today, thank goodness they're open at 7am to make an appointment.

there are many stories about monsters in the dark, maybe reading those can reassure him.  i'm thinking pixar's monsters, inc   delphine peret's "the big bad wolf and me"

other ideas:
nightlight helps
transitional song helps getting to sleep
rehearsing going to sleep during the day
praying with them

you don't have to go and sleep with him.  if you're firm like you wife has been, they will understand you're in the room next door.  it will break your heart for a few days/weeks, but it's better not to co-sleep or have them depend on you being present for them to fall asleep...
