It's always something!!!!!(As Gilda used to say)

Jul 22, 2008 03:40PM - 13 comments

Hi all,
I decided to write this update as a journal entry to save time from writing it to everyone separately.
O.K. So, today I got up early and headed off to the gyn clinic to reschedule the surgery, it takes about half an hour to get there & car parked, ect. I go up to the front desk and tell the receptionist I have no appointment on record but the doctor told me last Monday when I cancelled the surgery to be there today at 12 noon to reschedule. I early as I figure it can't hurt being it's the clinic. She tells me, "I have to check with her, so take a seat". About 20 minutes later a nurses aide calls me in to the back and asks why are you here today , this is the usual in clinics, I'm used to having to repeat myself at least a dozen times a visit.. I tell her what I told the receptionist, guess what she says, right," I'll have to check with her"..I wait another 10 minutes for her to come back. She informs me the doctor said she told you to come in at 12:30 for the 1p.m. pre-op clinic,  they're doing pre-natals now and after lunch the surgery clinic starts. I said, NO, the doctor told me 12 noon and I have it on my answering machine. This makes no difference, I have to wait until after 1 anyway or reschedule an appointment to reschedule the surgery. I decided to wait even though there are about 40 women in the waiting room and there are children screaming all over the place. I sent my friend to go get us a snack somewhere rather than take my car and come back because I knew I'd lose my parking spot. She comes back with some god awful chicken thing and a soda, but I eat it anyway. At about 1:30 the nurse calls me in to wait for the doctor inside in an exam room, I bring my girlfriend in with me to make sure I have someone to listen to what's being said by the doctor.  Who comes in 20 minutes later, not my surgeon, but a resident and a student tagging along with her. She's holding some report thingy and states, " you report is back from the caridologist but you can't have surgery without a stress test first. To which I respond, I never saw a cardiologist, you must have the wrong person. She ignores me and states,  You went to the cardiologist on the 16th and the report says there's a problem with your EKC so we can't reshedule until you have a stress test. I tell her I didn't go anywhere on the 16th I was home and I didn't see any Dr.???cardiologist, I think you have the wrong patient. She looks at me like I'm crazy. I say, don't you think I'd know if I saw a cardiologist? I told her to go get the surgeon and she'll tell you the surgery was supposed to be on the 14th but was cancelled due to my asthma.. Now they leave, and I'm ready to choke somebody as they have sent me all over creation for months just to get this surgery..So, the surgeon comes in and says, I got this report sent to me last week from the EKC you had done and it says you have abnormal patterns in your Q-waves and I wasn't letting you have the surgery that day anyway.. I say "what are you talking about, I told you I had bad asthma on the phone that morning and you said come in today and reschedule, you didn't mention anything about a bad cardiogram.. She says, well, it was the report that got written up on the 16th, not that I saw the doctor that day and that's when the cardiologist reviewed it, and sent it to her. This makes no sense because she wouldn't have known this on the 14th.  I tell her fine, but then why did the GP at the Adult Medicine clinic you sent me to for clearance on the 10th say to me your fine have the surgery and clear me. She tells me she never got any clearance report and do I have a  letter from him?  I say no, they were faxing the report to you so you'd have it by the 14th.I hand her his card and she leaves again, and now me and my friend are freaking out. I tell her I feel like I'm in an episode of the Twilight Zone, as we're assuming it's a case of mistaken identinity ( wrong report, wrong patient )
She comes back in and sits down and say's " Oh, I just had them send me the report from clearance, they never got it out to me, but your right you did see the doctor and he cleared you and read the EKC." I'm feeling very justified now, and think she's about to reschedule, when she blurts out... but you still have to go for an Echo cardiogram because it was reviewed by a cardiologist and you can 't get anesthesia and have a coronary on the operating table. I ask her why would she say that, and she says, because the report says you may have had a HEART ATTACK!!! What the ***** is she kidding me????? I tell her, but I had 2 EKC's that day, one in pre-op and one at medical clearance. How could one be fine and one say I have something about low voltage and Q waves?? She doesn't know, and she says go and get an echo and see the cardiologist and then when she gets the reports she'll call me and  reschedule by phone to save me another trip... How nice of her.. So I'm going for an echo on Friday morning and seeing a cardiologist on Aug.6th, and I'm so confused it isn't funny... Oh and she never asked about the asthma at all, which is why I cancelled last week.
Here's the best part of my day ... I get back to my car which is baking hot and see a PARKING TICKET under the windshield wiper.. for $115.00 saying I was 2 feet from a hydrant!! A guy before me was parked there all morning and gave me the spot, it wasn't in between the lines where you can't park, but I think as my cars a little longer than the one that was there, like a fraction of the bumper long, some meter maid gave me a ticket..
car..my car.. pedestrian line..hydrant..curb!!!
If I haven't had a heart attack yet, I may get one now..
P.S. I never have had any heart problems or symptoms of heart disease..
I came home and threw myself on the bed in the A/C where I just may stay until fall comes around..
It's always something!!!

OMG !!! Are you ****** kidding !!!!  It would be funny if not so awful ! .. You know, there might be something to this astrology stuff ... I heard there are about 4 planets "In Retrograde" .. and I know that means nothing works right !! Could it be??? And, who gets to pay for all these additional tests???

I think you have the right idea.. just stay in bed till the 6th... It's really not that far away LOL.... Take care and try not to have "another " episode....

Valerie,
My mind is so completely whacked out just trying to follow your story and these stupid a** doctors that I don't even know what to say.  Sandy said it good - the planets must be out of alignment. I think that is my problem too.  I am confused, Did you ever go to a cardiologist in the first place???? or are they just insisting you see one now and they are reading some other poor soul's report? What if it is a mixup?

You must be so upset because you have your brother scheduled and the dog walker. Oh MY!!!! I just can't even comprehend it all!

How generous of her to reschedule over the phone. How about if she pays the cardiologist bill and the darn parking ticket.  It is all so surreal that you must actually have laughed.  Good grief girl. I do think you might have to hide inside until fall. We will let you know when it is time to come out again.

Love you!
Colleen

God Bless U Valerie
u handled it with such grace that they weill hafta see the light eventually.  just about everyone in the free world would have blown their stack.  those are fighting words.  granted there is no gentle way to give out what u percieve as bad news but i think that was way too cold.  they know what ur history is and hide behind the anonymity of the clinic setting.  how sad for them.  the ticket was just insult to injury.  i am grateful though that ur surgery was rescheduled until after u get ur ticker checked.  i pray it was an anomaly or related to ur asthma (irreglar breathing can throw off an ekg i've seen it happen ALOT with asthma patients) and in no way is a heart condition.  I will be keeping u in prayer
love

Sandy and Colleen,
I think you may be right about the planets being in retrograde, maybe everyone is just a little nutty right now. I wonder if it has anything to do with my uterus being retroverted!!!
My brother hasn't called me to find out about when to take off yet, so that's a good thing, and the dog walker is next door and she's not working now so I'm not too worried about that, I told her it would probably be in late August or September by the way they take so long to reschedule anyway.
I haven't ever seen a cardiologist, I just had the pre-ops where they do the usual EKG and the doctor cleared me, then I guess the results were forwarded to be read by the specialist due to the abnormality.
I wish could say I laughed but it was so head bending I just was shocked, and until I go for the test on Friday and get the results on the 6th, I think my ability to laugh at anything medical has been put on an indefinite hold. My insurance will pay for all this so that's one relief, but not the parking ticket.. That will come out of my budget and I guess some other bill I owe will get shorted a bit more than usual this month.
I am so comfortable in my nice air conditioned bedroom with my tv, laptop and my dog resting in the doorway, I really just may stay here until you tell me when it's safe to come out again!!
Thanks for the support
Valerie

Sharon
I just saw your post after I posted above, and yes, I think it may be due to the asthma problems I've been having recently. I told the drs. that at the testing, maybe that's why I was cleared in the first place.  I wanted to really tell her off, but I did let her know she better explain the little she did because she wasn't even going to do that much. I just don't want to get on her bad side because she's the one who will be doing the surgery and I wouldn't want her to be holding a grudge with a knife in her hand!!
It really is because it's the clinic, there are just so many people there it's like a factory. There's very little real concern as they have hundreds of patients a week. I do make myself heard though, I think they're finally getting to know me enough to remember me for the next visit.

Hi Valerie,
I go to an overworked, undertaffed clinic and it's a miracle there aren't more mistakes even without retrograde planets!!  I'm very sorry you were caught up in so much "red tape" and most especially that no one thought of the impact such news could have... glad you had a friend with you!   At least you will get the Echo test done this week... and are always well within your rights to ask afterwards, when the report will be submitted and you're also entitled to copies of your own medical information... if you want it.

I know some people at the clinic consider me to be a "pain in the &%%*" but... I get copies of my own tests, carry them with me to various medical places and just (usually politely) refuse to leave until things are explained to my satisfaction.  Sometimes the technique requires going to Administrators and occasionally the best I come away with is agreement (ficticious or otherwise) that policy should be reviewed.  But, at worst I know I'm staying informed and perhaps in some cases things may be made a little better for the next person...

Have you been treated for asthma by a specialist??  They (or the GP if you don't have one) may have idea's about the bizzare report and if asthma problems could have caused different findings.  Another source of information could be the physician who "cleared" you for surgery... that person was aware of the asthma issue from what you said, but may not have had any reason to know your reports would be sent to a Cardiologist for review and so the information about asthma wouldn't have necessarily been known to that Cardiologist...

Keep making yourself heard Valerie, and if you have the energy to write what happened up as an "incident report" with a little creative technique on the telephone you can usually submit it to Administration by e-mail through an assistant or secretary... if you want to.  Since your friend was with you, you have a witness and can also protest the parking ticket if you choose to fight it and in "my experience" a lot of times the "ossifer" doesn't even show up so the case is thrown out when you make the court aware you have an witness to "being inside the lines".  All my best wishes for better health (and weather) for you!!  Susie

That is so damn unbelievable! (I don't swear a lot but it is fun on here because it gets starred out anyway!)  My goodness you certainly deserve a break.  I really really hope all goes well with the retesting and that you get rescheduled very quickly.  Rant any time you want.  Treat yourself to something sinful to eat or drink and try to smile.

Love,
Trudie

To All,
This just keeps getting better by the minute.. I just opened a letter from my medical coverage and they now said that even though my doctors requested over-rides to increase my labs, drs. visits, tests, ect. that because I have used so many this year, they won't extend it to more than 6 more prescriptions, 2 more drs. visits, and 4 more labs. Since the letter went out, that means I already used 1 visit today, and filled 3 prescriptions a few days ago for asthma and pain meds. Now they have to investigate whether to extend the coverage and further until the new fiscal year starts October 1st. and I'm only covered in case of an accident or "if you become very sick".  I only have 1 more visit to use for a dr., and need to see my GP at least 2 more times to get my meds before then. If they bill the echo as a visit, then I'll have to pay for all my further drs. including the cardiologist on the 6th. I know it's because of my broken leg and all the visits to the gyn clinic and then all the other drs. they sent me to see. This just puts the icing on the cake.. there's nothing my doctor can even do because she already sent the request in a few weeks ago and this was the letter to confirm it. I guess I won't be having any surgery until sometime after October when the new fiscal year starts on my coverage. God Bless America, they really take care of their own.

What is their definition of "if you become very sick".  Is the reason for surgery not enough?  Wish I could bring you here to Canada...

by vallieanne, Jul 22, 2008 09:33PM
That's a good question Trudie, as they already have been notified by my Primary Care dr. that I'm a chronic pain patient, have a failed spine surgery, multiple ortho issues, asthma, ect. and that I'm undergoing testing for a surgery to remove an ovarian mass. I use the term mass, because even though it was diagnosed as a cyst originally, the surgeon ( that I saw today ) has stated that due to a discrepancy on the Cat Scan and US, they thought it was a simple unilocular cyst, but now she doesn't think so. She told me today that she won't really know for sure what it is until she gets in and see's it, and that even though it may or may not be cancer, it's not a life threatening surgery, it's elective.. meaning, that unless I had something that was going to "immediately kill me" she won't do the surgery until she gets clearance from the cardiologist now. The Medicaid states that if you have an accident or "become very sick" it's the only way they'd cover more things until they finish the investigation. So, become very sick would mean probably the same thing the doctor means as life threatening surgery. Unless I'm at deaths door, I have to wait in line until they're all ready to do anything. I wish you could bring me to Canada too... I've been there, and it's beautiful. What could I do to claim asylum and live there??
If I throw myself under a bus, that would be an accident, then while I'm in the hospital they'd have to do the heart tests and I could tell them my "cyst" hurts and demand they do surgery before I got released.. assuming I survive the bus running over me!!
I'm going to have to try and call tomorrow and see if I can get more info and then try and call my GP and see what she can figure out.
How's are u feeling with the work so far, I'm guessing pretty tired.
Hugs
Val

I don't understand this at all.  I am SOOOOOO sorry you have to deal with idiot @sses on top of everything else.  I am with Trudie; what do they consider "very sick" and shouldn't be needing surgery be enough to qualify?  I don't understand how your ins can limit how many Drs visits and scrips you get.  Since my husband lost his job we have had to pay 1800 a month to COBRA our ins and if they pulled a stunt like that with me I would be raising holy hell.  (Sorry Trudie, not as much gets bleeped in journals.)  You may have to become a screaming maniac to get someones attention. I just don't understand how they can deny you surgery when they are telling you you have to have it out RIGHT NOW.  What is this **** about a new fiscal year?  What does that have to do with anything?

You are so right about our wonderful country.  We should be ashamed of ourselves.  My husband lost his job through no fault of his own and we are having to exhaust everything we have ever worked for just to pay ins premiums we can ill afford with neither of us working.

Good luck working your way through the insurance maze.

Well, you aren't too far away.  Want to be introduced to a good looking Canadian man?  Unfortunately bad healthcare doesn't qualify for asylum.  But if you think about it, is not just as bad as the guy who will be prosecuted if he stays in his own country?  It's a life at stake isn't it?  Tell me where the difference lies.

by lvfrogs, Jul 23, 2008 07:15AM
Sharon,
SBF(Susie) had really good comments.  You should definitely get copies of all your reports.  Maybe you could fight all of this by having paperwork that shows your chronic condition, chronic need for pain meds, and your asthma. They are treating you like you are a normal person (well, you are normal), you know what I mean, like someone who just has one issue and that can be taken care of, but your situation is not that way.  You should contact McCain and Obama and lay your case out - a perfect example of the crappy health care/insurance we have in this country.

I told you that my insurance co. is trying to fight paying for my surgery. I will fight them all the way, because it is just WRONG!

You could go to the ER I guess and say you are in so much pain from the cyst and need surgery right away?  That is sad to think we would have to do this.

On a lighter note, when I was first divorced I did some "online chatting" (like through Yahoo personals, I think it was), and met a really wonderful Canadian man, lived right on the border.  Maybe we could find him again for you Sharon!!  He really was a real sweetheart but just lived too far away.

Hugs and prayers for you!!! Let us know,
Colleen
