I was at an AA meeting last night, my friend that has terminal colon cancer and has stopped tx, came in late, it was obvious she was weak and had lost much weight. She shared about a question on admitting powerlessness over alcohol, and made a good point while helping a newcomer. Nothing about how she was feeling or anything. It was as if she had no other concerns besides the meeting. I talked to her later and noticed that her comments in conversation were short honest and to the point, sometimes abrasive. She only when asked complained of being nauseous and weak. To me there is such strength and beauty in her honesty and lack of self centeredness.

I can't imagine how hard it must be to decide to terminate tx and face your own mortality in such an immediate context.  I applaud your friend - how gracious of her to give her time and wisdom to others.  So many people would be concentrating on their own problems.  She must be a really special woman.

Facinating, I used to attend AA meetings all the time even though I really belonged in the other meeting, NA.  You truly meet some amazing ppl there who are truly winners.  That's what makes the program work, to make it simple you basically want what they (have).  What makes it better is the more you go the more you feel like it's attainable.  "Honesty and lack of self centeredness", most likely the complete opposite of what it used to be like.  With years of therapy and attending meetings for years I found a nice balance, simple translation of that with all honesty, is I most likely need a meeting.  LOL    God Bless

to fretboard,
LOL, yea when you don't think you need a meeting you need a meeting. When you think you need a meeting, duh, I guess we just need meetings. I go to AA and NA, home group is NA, in this area, AA seems to have more recovery and is less chaotic and more flexible in structure of meetings. I relate with both and find miracles in each, the 12 steps of recovery could be applied to just about everything. I got drunk with drunks and now stay sober with drunks.

Peace and Health
