"THE OAK TREE"

Jul 24, 2008 - 28 comments

A mighty wind blew night and day, it stole the oak trees leaves away,
Then snapped its boughs and pulled its bark until the oak was tired and stark.
But still the oak tree held its ground while other trees fell all around...
The weary wind gave up and spoke, "How can you still be standing, Oak?"
The oak tree said, "I know that you can break each branch of mine in two,
carry every leaf away,
shake my limbs, and make me sway.
But I have roots stretched in the earth, growing stronger since my birth.
You'll never touch them, for you see, they are the deepest part of me.
Until today, I wasn't sure of just how much I could endure.
But now I've found with thanks to you

                         I'm stronger than
                                         I ever new."

The thing is we never figure out how strong we are until trials hit us. Then we figure out how deep our roots go. I think that's why God allows trials in our lives. That's the only way our faith really grows and we learn compassion, patience and wisdom. We also learn to depend on God for all our needs. Our dependence on God doesn't make us weak. On the contrary, we become strong through Him.

Some people will fall away or become bitter and give up when things get tough and it's a real shame because there's such a powerful life lesson there if we are willing to learn and listen. The people I've admired the most is the people who have gone through a tragedy and not only came through it but went on to use it to help others. I think of John Walsh who's child, Adam, was kidnapped and murdered many years ago. He could have let that destroy him and it nearly did. He did go a little crazy at first, but look at him now. Because of him so many laws have been passed to better protect children and he's gone on to host the America's Most Wanted show and has helped capture many, many criminals and get them off the street. I have a lot of admiration for that man.

We have such a short time on this earth. I truly believe we were put here to learn, grow and help others. We weren't meant to only live for ourselves. For it's through our reaching out to others that we will truly live and have meaning ourselves.
Thank you for the inspiring short story. God bless you, my friend.

Hey you guys....

Jimi  I don't know if you wrote The Oak  Tree or not.....Doesn't really matter.....Sharing  bits such as this makes everybody stop and think...... You have to drain some strenght from an author that can reach deep into anothers soul and say    "hang in there, the storms water brings our leaves for shade"..... I love it.....
I don't like saying that to other guys so I won't..... Gator

April, your turn,

Of all the people that make a difference in the lives of others, I agree, John Walsh has got to be one of the greatest, strongest, and focused  I have ever seen....Yes there are  many others that have done a lot of good for the world we live in.....
John  reaches everybody with his work...... Children, parents, wanna be parents, grand parent, aunts, uncles and  the justice system, and yes even criminals..... For they know when John takes a case there is nowhere to hide...... Our world is a safer place because of the inner strenght of this wonderful man.....  As for Adam, Adam has also contributed to our world more than many realize....... Sadly it is his death that keeps him alive with all who feel compassion for those who suffer more than the rest of us...... When I look at people such as the Walsh family I see my problems are not as great as theres....... Many of our problems can be fixed with a pill or therapy.... There is not a pill or enough therapy in the world to mend a broken heart.... Without God this man would have faded away long ago and the good work he does may never have been done..... How he does it I'll never know......

If the rest of us learn from this familys strenght and misery and example, then a lot of good has come from so much pain......I find your POV very interesting....Gator

I love this poem, if we all just would realize how deep our roots really are, that we need to stand tall regardless of what comes our way, we will be OK. Thanks for sharing this ...

This poem made me think of my dad who was a mighty oak tree.  He fought the biggest fight of his life when he had brain cancer.  He fought with mental toughness that i had never seen before and with dignity and class and i am so proud to say i am one of his roots.                    sara

Dominosarah,

I too thought of my dad when reading that. He fought the battle of his life also, with Parkinson's Disease. He was an amazing man. Never complained once!! He was a true example of what a Christian should be. The only thing he ask God is to allow him to remember how to pray and all of the scriptures he had memorized. God did in fact answer that prayer. Dad's mind was completely clear when someone needed him to pray for them, or if dad needed to teach someone about Jesus Christ and the plan of salvation. Dad led a man to the Lord just 3 weeks before he died. The man died exactly 3 weeks after my dad died. God is awesome!! I was so blessed to have two wonderful fathers. My earthly father and my heavenly father. "Thanks" Dominosarah for allowing me to share a story about my wonderful dad. It feels good to share him with the world. He lives on through his stories and me. God Bless Everyone!!

I just love your style of writing......... The things you say , the things you bring to the rest of us.... It is just an uplifting piece........ Every writer has their own style.....Usually one is  unable to copy anothers style because the words come from different areas with the variation of writers.....
Some write with more emotion than others....Some do it just to hurry and get it done.....  Others put too much effort into a piece......
With that in mind I try reading as much of another person as I can,  because you can find out  a lot about someone just by what they write....Are they angry, happy, sad, depressed, excited, informed all the emotions we have is brought to light in ones writing.... I never used my writing talents until recently.....My education level is way below 8th grade..... So I always thiought I was incapable, or out of my league...  Then once I said to myself "you like writing so much so do it"......  So now I just jump in and swim.........Whenever I can help another here or anywhere  I use my ability to write  as much as I can now...... There are some people that have a difficult time with words so I help them write letters to  their families overseas....... Problem is I found out a lot later in life than I would have liked..... Sorry to tie up your space Pal.... I just wanted to share that with you......Later, Gator

In my photos I have a picture of a old magnificent Oak.. This would fit well :)
As you know trees are special too me.. spiritual.. The tie that binds the ethereal to the solid..  The Father the Mother.. their child is air.. The tops nourished by above.. the roots nourished below.. entwined..forever giving.. forever enduring.. lesa

Good story and a good point. We never know our strength until we face hard times, challenges, disappointments, and what not.

"The Oak Tree" by Johnny Ray Ryder

came across this poem while looking for a poem fit for my 80 years-old mother-in-law, a symbol of strength and endurance.

My sister just died of cancer this past Wednesday, December 2, at the age of 52. Her 25 year old daughter (my neice) read this poem at the start of her memorial. My sister was given an original diagnosis of 6 mos. to 1 year to live-- nearly seven years ago-- this poem epitomizes what she was all about.
