My notes from today's broadcast:
The best way to keep from getting a cold is to protect yourself by staying away from those who cough, have good ventilation if you have to be in areas where people are coughing, and practice good hygiene such as alcohol hand rubs and wipes.
The reason is that viral particles build up and are most concentrated in the days just before people start having symptoms and these infected people are spreading the viruses even before they start coughing and sneezing.
The flu is much worse than a cold, with fever, chills, muscle and joint aches. I had it last June if you can believe it, I caught it in singapore, and was hallucinating the whole flight home. Influenza peaks in January and February so get your flu shot if you haven't yet.
Something I would have liked to mention was that if someone coughs for more than 3 weeks, I start to worry about pertussis and it's worth seeing a doctor to consider a test for that, and possibly antibiotics. This is also called whooping cough.
It was a lot of fun to be on the radio and I hope I get a chance to chat with the folks at KGO soon!
