swollen jaw, lips, tounge

Aug 06, 2008 - 1 comments

About 10 years ago, my jaws swelling once a year or so.  It would typically be back to normal by evening and it always occurs during the night.  At this point, it is happening once to twice a month including swollen lips and tounge.  I have tried allegra, zyrtec, claritin and benadryl. It is now lasting 2 to 3 days.  Does anyone know anything about something like this?  My glands are not swollen.  Thanks.

For the past 2 months I have had episodes every couple of weeks (always in the middle of the night).  The first time I woke up with a hard swollen numb chin...radiating to the right side of my jaw.  I thought I had a stroke!  I went to the doctor and they didn't know what caused it so they gave me antibiotics (of course, throw antibiotics at everyhting they can't explain!)  A few weeks later I woke up with my top right lip swollen to like 3 times its normal size.  Back to the doctor...this time they said I must be allergic to something and gave me Xyzal, an antihistamine.  Both times, the symptoms disapperaed within a few hours or so.  Today I woke up to a swollen, kind of numb tongue.  Again, just the right side.  I don't know what to think about this.  I have read many blogs where people have similar symptoms and their doctors are baffled.  They usually diagnose it as idiopathic angioedema, which just means they don't know what's causing it.  Have you had any other episodes since August?
