amitriptyline

12 month ago, I got an headace, no regular pain releave drug can stop it, I have been taking amitriptyline for about 1 year, 10mg, I only take half of it every day before bed time for my headace. But I really want to stop taking it, however, every time I stopped taking it for 3 days, my headace would come back, and other affects such as fatigue, difficult to sleep, losing appetite, my blood preasure would rise up too.
shoud I stop taking it or keep having this medication forever?

I take Amitriptyline 50mg, every night for my chronic headaches and it works to keep the pain at bay. When, in the past, I went off it because I ran out of the pills or because I got fed up with taking it, I got really very unwell - I was basically having withdrawal symptoms. This is what probably happened to you earlier this year. If you want to go off the medication, like with all medication, you have to wean yourself off of it, in say 5mg increments.

We have a 3 year old son that has also been having headaches that no one can help.  He was put on 10mg, then 20mg and then 30mg of Amitriptyline.  When he reached 30mg, it was like switching on a light.  He became very disturbed, distant, defiant and withdrawn.  He no longer had any joy in his life.  He started having suicidal thoughts.  We took him off of the medication, and it took a few weeks and some time in a mental hospital, but he returned to normal.  I would like for every parent to ask their doctor about the side effects of this drug before starting your child on it.  The experience scared his mother and I very very much. No family should ever have to go through something like this.
