July 11th I walked into a ER my feet n half way up my legs were purplish/red pin size dots... petechiae (is what they called it) anyway I was also bleeding from my gums. AND 37 weeks pregnant. When they took blood draw they found out I had an extremely LOW blood platelet count. The normal count is about 150,000- 400,000, I had 2,000. I was then admitted and put on Prednisone through IV 80mg a day.... a few days went by and I was given some transfusions.... 3 bags of "globulin" to "boost" my platelet rebuilding and due to my hemoglobin level dropping while I was there I also had a blood transfusion. I stayed in the hospital 11 days, currently go for weekly blood draws and weaning off the steriod weekly. My platelet count is over 200,000 now however there are no answers what is wrong or why that happened. ITP which is what they call it when they dont know... or that it was pregnancy related however normally this happens early on and not so extreme... Now to see if once off steroid my counts stay normal or drop again. Side effects are bothersome right now as far as I wake up sweating sooo bad, soaked, Im endlessly hungry and my face/neck areas have swollen up huge! I am breastfeeding and currently on 40mg of prednisone, Im concerned about what amount is getting through the milk. I guess Im wondering if anyone has heard of a similar situation and any input on the breastfeeding while on steroid.
