No cameras allowed!

Aug 25, 2008 04:44AM - 6 comments

Before I say anything else, I have to admit, the ticket given to me for last nights Bob Dylan concert was about the best concert ticket I have ever had. The concert was in an outside stadium, with regular seating. But there were 2 rows on seats on the floor, right in front of the stage. We were in the 2nd row. Security told us when the concert started we could go up to the barrier in front of the stage and stand there if we wanted (DUH! yeah, we wanted!) And our seats would still be there for us as nobody else was going to be allowed down on the floor. That part was great. I have only made it to the stage barrier at one other concert in my life, years ago when I was much younger. And I had to fight during half the concert to get there, and when I did, I was not going anywhere as the masses were keeping me right there.
We were told upon entering that no cameras were allowed. Fine, I didn't have my camera, but I did have my phone!
Once down there we heard the security guys talking about people with phones. They said they could not do much about the audiance itself but they could watch those of us on the floor. That is fine too because my phone does not flash when it takes a picture. It took me a while to get brave enough to try it but when I did, I got 2 good pictures. I was glad I stopped when I did because some big guy came flying down there and jumped all over a gal that had her phone out. I know the she got PO'd because she was getting the pictures for her better half, another gal whom she spent the entire concert hanging all over right there in the middle of the floor. YUCK!
When they were done playing and left the stage, we knew that they would come back out at least once. But before they did, security let all of the wild, drunk, old hippies come down to the floor area right along with us. Ok, so no big deal really, but I wish they would have told us. So Ol' Bob comes back out and they go wild! and out comes the cell phones. Then I got the rest of my pictures. I never did see what the big deal was in the first place, esp if they were going to do that at the end. But I was good as I did not want to get kicked out after my girlfriend spent 200$ on our 2 tickets.
Now my review of Ol' Bob. (and I say that in all seriousness) Does anyone know just how old that man is? I am not sure either, but I don't think that he has a whole lot of concerts left in him.
Now I have been to a lot of concerts of all kinds in my 47 years, but I have to admit that this one was not like any one I have ever seen. Bob and the band played for 2 hours and in that 2 hours, not one word was said to the crowd. (Most of the time you at least get a "Hi Evansville, are you ready to rock?" or something similar) Even more strange, not Bob, nor any of his band members ever even looked at the crowd. His keyboard was turned so that it faced the left hand side of the stage, and the band members all stared at him through out every song.
Don't get me wrong, we had a great time, but we had just as much fun critiquing (sp?) it afterwards also.
We could not figure it out. They watched him like hawks. We could not decide if they were in awe of him or just keeping a close eye on him. He has had some great songs over the years. If he sang them last night, neither of us knew. He was very hard to understand. When they came out for their encore, they were half way through their first song when we looked at each other and realized "hey" we know that song! (but that was because all of the drunk, hippies behind us were singing it, and we could understand them) When it was over, Karen told me that she did not really recognize anything that he sang. I looked at her and said," I know but think about it, hell, we might have known all of them and just didn't kow it"
Ok the man is a legend all his own and the fact that we got to see him was awesome. It would have just been a little more awesome if we had seen him when he was a little younger. But we were lucky enough to be close enough to that legend to watch the sweat drip off his nose!

I downloaded a few pictures but as I had to take them on my phone, they are not real clear. But knowing they were taken with a phone will give you an idea just how close we were.

Chris,
I really enjoyed reading this first thing in the morning, it gave me a big laugh :)
I am so glad that you go to go and you really enjoyed the concert, even if you couldn't understand anything he said! I am jealous of your great seats and how close  you got to go. I have been to some concerts with pretty good seats but not quite that good. Once we had great seats to a Shania Twain concert (I am a huge country fan) and I was beyond excited. However, once the concert started, everyone stood up the entire time and since I am so short (5'), I saw her concert through a tiny slit between 2 people.
Kind of strange that Dylan never looked at the crowd or addressed the crowd. I have never seen that at a concert, and does anyone know how old he really is???
Glad you enjoyed yourself - you deserve it!!
Hugs,
Colleen

Chris, what a great opportunity!  I looked it up and he is 67.  I'm so glad you got to go and enjoy yourself.  Colleen, Shania grew up in the same town as my husband and went to high school with his brother.  She came back to Canada when her marriage broke up to be with her sister in Huntsville.  One of my friends ran into her at a drug store.  Very cool!

Chris,

What a great story....He is getting up there for concerts...Your pictures are pretty great and you are right he is a legend.  Maybe you have to be drunk or something to understand him. LOL... The hippies were....I am glad you and Karen had a great time.  Concerts can be fun I have been to a few although it has been a while...

Love,
Dawnlyn

Hey Chris,
Ringo is 68 and he still remembers the words and got us all singin Yellow Submarine!  I guess some of these geezers should know when to quit!  Dylan has always been a strange bird, had a feeling he might disappoint...
You sound like the kind of gal that can make an evening fun under any circumstances!

After reading the review that the Evansville, IN newspaper gave Bob Dylan's concert last night, I think that I am better off leaving my own review right here. If it were to get out, I would probably become public enemy #1.
But if I were to compare the way that she saw the show and the way that I saw the show, I'll bet anything that I had a lot more fun!!
