Treating solders returning from Iraq.

Jan 10, 2008 06:36AM - 1 comments

To treat soldiers returning from Iraq with wound infections caused by Acinetobacter baumannii, doctors are resorting to using a drug called Colistin. The medicine fell out of use decades ago because it can cause severe damage to the kidneys.  The authors of the IDSA report noted that Acinetobacter can also cause pneumonia; mortality rates for the pneumonia can be 20% or more.

Dear Thomsyn,

I am a high school student in TN.   I am doing a research paper on nosocomial infections.
I am finding it difficult to find information in layman terms that tell what symptoms and effects various
infection can have. In particular, I need information on:

    * Staphylococcus aureus
    * Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
    * Pseudomonas aeruginosa
    * Acinetobacter baumannii
    * Stenotrophomonas maltophilia
    * Clostridium difficile

Would you be willing to correspond with me or recommend resources?

Thank you,

Globug
