Benadryl & Sleep

I had a couple mosquito bites that were driving me crazy, so I took a Benadryl before dinner last night at my parents' house. By the time dinner was over, I could barely keep my eyes open. So I laid down on the couch and took an hour-long nap. Didn't sleep well since everyone else was watching TV, cleaning up in the kitchen, talking, etc. My mom woke me up around 10:45 to take some photos of the family together (my aunt and uncle leave next week to return home) and then I drove back to my apartment in the city around 11:30. I was so tired, but kept waking up during the night and had several nightmares. I wonder if all this is caused by the Benadryl or the hot temperature.

I take benadryl for sleep. I do not get nightmares. I would look at the possibility of the heat and combo of benadryl.

I use benadryl to help sleep and have not had problems with it waking me.  Keep in mind that it only works in the body for around 4 hours.

Benadryl is my new best friend. I can't stay asleep without it. (it's the PM in Tylenol PM...) BUT, interestingly enough, my children have had nightmares from it, and it actually said it was a side effect on a label of the topical solution for bites, so maybe it just is different for everyone. Or maybe the nap was just enough to keep you from a truly good deep sleep and that's what caused the nightmares. Hope this helps!

Oh, I forgot to mention that I also sprayed on the Benadryl Anti-Itch spray. Maybe that's what caused the problem. Thanks for the info, painterchic.

For the most part, Benadryl will help with sleep, BUT there are times when it will do the opposite, and totally wire you up and prevent sleep.

I'm one of those people that can't tolerate it.

I often use it to help me sleep. Sometimes, If I am in a relaxed stated, I have no problems with it. However, if I take some and go to bed in a wound up state, it makes me sleepy, but also I wake more and have more dreams and am generally restless and get less sleep. This happened to me last night. I tossed and turned, got little sleep and feel exhausted today.

Does anyone know if there is any long term effects from using it so often, other than a possible reliance issue? I wonder sometimes if it could affect my body in other ways....

There are always a possability of long lasting effects from being on any medication for long periods of time. Besides becoming addicted to the drug, and drug taken very often in regular amounts can cause liver issues. It makes the liver work harder and sometimes the liver cannot flush all the medication out, therefore it sits in the liver and causes issues. Thats also why they say not to take so much tylenol.

My Ex-Mother-in-law took benadryl for years...the doctor said it was the safest medicine on the market.

I find that if i have to many sweets. past dinner time..this is what keeps me up. Actually not the benadryl.

No long term side affects have been noticed from her taking it. It just wore off after many years and now she needs to take an actual sleep med.

I haven't read all of the responses, but I know that you aren't suppose to take the oral Benadryl and use the cream at the same time.  It says it on the label.

I have taken some medicines that have caused me to have nightmares and as earlier said, it is probably different for everyone.  Also as previously said, it can have the opposite effect on you and cause you to be wired.  I have a friend that absolutely cannot take Benadryl because it will cause her to be wired and not be able to sleep.
