Confused about Thyroid

Oct 16, 2007 11:59AM - 1 comments

This madness started Sept. 2004 when i was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Everything was fine and i've kept it under control with 75 mcg Levothyroxine. In July of this year i started having swollen lymph nodes in my neck. Went to a Dr and was given antibiotics. Went to another Dr for a second opinion and was sent for a thyroid U/S and blood work. My T3,T4, and TSH levels were normal while on levothyroxine. The ultrasound showed a "grossly" enlarged left thyroid lobe. Then i'm sent to have a neck CT which showed enlargement of left thyroid lobe with possible substernal extension. Then i'm sent for a thyroid uptake and scan (had to be off my meds over a month) which says abnormal thyroid uptake and scan demonstrating findings consistant with Graves' Disease. The surgeon mentioned that i could have the radioiodine treatment or surgery since there is still the possibility of cancer. What i'm trying to figure out is how i could go from being hypothyroid to hyperthyroid in two months, not to mention losing my voice, gaining weight and being cold while others are warm since i stopped taking levothyroxine. What am i missing, or what are they missing for that matter. Anyone have an opinion? Please share.

hi,
have you got hypo and hyper the wrong way round in you posting - your new symptoms being consistent with hypothyroid.
im in the same boat as you - hyperthyroid came first - weight loss, anxiety, memory loss, concentration problems, light hurts eyes , hand tremor and heat intolerance, storms 110 beats a minute and dizzy.
now in the course of a few weeks on carbimazole and beta blockers im told i know am hypothyroid - headaches and eye pressure, very tired all the time, feeling cold, dry skin.- how can i forget terrible brain fog

i reckon ive had thyoid trouble since the age of about 16 and that it has come and gone all my life but really getting bad and consistent at the age of 44 over a year ago.

my consultant wants to keep changing my tablets and ive felt ill every day for over a year.i just want radio iodine and to be so im told much more easily manged afterwards. i feel that because i live in the U.K. and we have a national health service that im not getting treated properly to save money.tablets i have to pay for cheaper than a treatment i dont.

sorry i cant give any medical advice just wanted to let you know you are not alone and wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery

regards....frank
