TSH

My tsh went for 1.77 to 4.84 in a month.  Been feeling horrible, tired, fatigued and worn out.  I knew something was wrong, but I figured it was the bcp.  Started two thyroid pills a day and will retest tsh in six weeks. I asked dr to test sooner, so hopefully she will write me back.

RE dr isn't concerned, which is what I thought he would do.  RE dr don't seem to know how important tsh really is to be around 1.  I am not surprised.  He also said it was not the birth control that made my tsh go up and then I opened a magazine my mom just gave me, Women's World July 25, 2011 and it said "Almost 40% of women develop sluggish thyroids within two months of starting the pill; doctors say switching to another form of birth control may resolve the problem."  Oh well, now I have to watch and see what happens after I go off of bcp with increased meds.

I attended my ivf protocol class.  DH was shocked by all the meds I will be taking.  I told him it was a lot of work!  He is freaked out about having to give me progesterone since he HATES needles. I am calm, feeling like it will all workout.  Meds were a small fortune not to mention ivf itself.  Really praying I get a few frozen embies so that I can do another cycle regardless of outcome.  Would be great to get a baby from first try and another one later, but my odds are really low due to elevated fsh. I just have to pray that my fsh has been high due to other factors and I am now getting it down.  I will continue acupuncture with Nancy.

I can't believe the dr said the BCP did not make your TSH go up when it SO obviously DID! Oh wait! I CAN believe it because most drs are idiots!!! Lol! OK, they're not idiots, but most of them can be pretty ignorant sometimes. And they think they know everything, too! And meanwhile, the normal range is supposed to go up to 3.0 not 5.0! Of course so many of them missed that memo! But the labs aren't helping anything by printing the normal range with the old numbers (0.5-5.0).

I pray for a great cycle for you guys! When did you check your FSH last? Don't worry about it any way. We know how well you respond to stimming so the number doesn't really matter! Your DH will get used to the needles, just like we got used to giving them to ourselves. Is baby aspirin part of your protocol? At my RE's office, it is part of the IVF protocol for all women.

Hopefully your stress level is nice and low since it is summer now. And hopefully that will help your FSH to come down! I saw this healer/craniosacral therapist on Wed. (was like acupuncture but without needles) She was INCREDIBLE! Since then I have been feeling much better! I also noticed something that really helped me is when I focus on breathing better. (i.e. more deeply) Normally I breathe really shallow, but while I was have the treatment, I really concentrated on breathing deep. And when I do that, I notice that my stomach acid production works again. Seriously! I could hear my breakfast digesting normally that day during the treatment and today while I was doing deep breathing right after eating! Crazy, huh?

Any way, hope the new thyroid meds dose helps you to feel better!

Glad things are moving along & you will start IVF soon.  It  certainly looks & is overwhelming when you start but if you were doing injectable IUI (not sure what you used) it's really not much different.  The progesterone is the hard one.  YOu can always ask if your Dr's office will give you shot if you go to them.  I did that with my first IVF until hubby got the hang of it.
As far as multiple eggs, how awesome would that be? I surely hope you get alot.  When you have your day 3 sono ask them what your antrol follie count is.  You will have an idea on how many to expect.
I am praying for you!!! Best Wishes.  When do you start?

I just went through Ivf in June.. I kept asking my RE keep tabs on my TSH.. They didn't I'm am so angry. I had my TSH a day before Beta with my endocrinologist and it was 21.59 with that high of a tsh nothing will implant.. My Endo yelled at me and said what are you doing did you stop taking your meds.. I was like are you kidding me ( right).. Like I would throw 15.000 down the tubs fricken tard.. My Endo sent a letter to RE and said those drugs caused her TSH to sky Rocket.. My Re said No way.. I was like what so hes lieing.. His answer was No I have never seen this... I call BS !!!! He never checked anyone that's why he says what he does. I told him it was his fault... and he asked me why did I get my TSH tested.. I said because i get it tested every two months and it si happened to fall a day before beta... ( really You asked me that) If he had done his job as a good dr.. a person on thyroid meds  already needs to be closely watched... Another thing to be careful of is that Lupron can allso raise TSH level really high which I was on as well 5mg in the morning and 5 at night it can give you symptoms of graves disease...All the drugs were on like during an IVF protocol are made up of the same TSH proteins which cause our thyroid to sky rocket.... Which I didnt look into til after it was all said and done.. And at the end of the meeting he was like well i can start another protocol the antagonist one (like i can just come up with another 15000) go's out his door and tells the nurse she is to be checked every two days on this protocol for tsh levels really I swear .. Some Dr's really don't understand the emotional stress we are in and to make mistakes like they do and say well lets do it again.. Like we all have thousands of dollars just laying around is mind boggling !!!!!

So Be your own advocate Dr's hate when you are armed with info.. Look up every drug your on so you know the side effects.. lesson learned for me...Because they don't say a thing... I haven't been on Ethyl Oleate (pio) shots for a month and i was allergic to it and didn't even now til two weeks after last shot when my rear broke out in hives and im still sore to the touch in the hip area.. Drs will sell you on anything the drug companys want them to push for kickbacks.. So investigate look up research ect.. It will save you heart ache and money knowing what you have researched..

Sorry so long but i hope this helps someone..

Hi Sherri, yes baby asipirin is part of my protocol and I started it a few days ago.  Today I actually feel better!  I think taking two meds the last two days has started to kick in.  I stop bcp pills tomorrow, yippee! Last time I did fsh, it was 8 but estradiol was up since I had a cyst, so I don't know what it is, but who knows, maybe thyroid makes it go up!  Glad you are feeling better, that is great news!

Hi Donna,
Yes, I am so glad I have already done injectables which were overwhelming the first time.  By the second time in May, I was feeling fine.  I start Lupron on Wed and injectables on Friday.  First u/s is Monday the 8th and I am ready to get this all started. I will ask about my antrafolicle count.  At most I have had in the past around 8 or so.  My dr office won't do progesterone, my DH asked, lol  He will be fine, he will get used to it, lol

Nina,
Wow, your infomation has really been powerful and I can not thank you enough. Since I start Lupron on Wed and my frist blood work is Monday Aug 8, I am going to write my dr this Monday and tell him I want a tsh everytime I go in for blood work. I will be my own advocate because they sure aren't looking out for me!  My plan will be to watch my tsh and if it is too high at retrival, then I will pursue a frozen cycle.  This woul let me get my body back on track for transfer and a successful ivf.  I had no idea bcp would mess with my tsh, and I didn't know Lupron would too, so you have given me a whole new plan and I have the time to get it going!  Like you, my IVF is about $15,000 so I want to make the best possible situation as my odds are already low.  Sherri and I are always saying that drs don't help enough and they just want our money!!!! I only started thyroid meds last summer, which my first RE prescibed when I requested to be tested and my tsh came back at 3.76.  Since taking meds I was doing fine, but I decided to be tested in June and my tsh was 1.77 and t3 was 70.  Sherri told me t3 is better around 90, so I asked my gp dr and she increased my meds to one extra on Sunday.  Imagine my surprise when I retested after more meds and my tsh went up instead of down!  I think I really need in endo, so I think that is part of my next step too.  My gp is nice, but she doesn't seem to get it either.  Anway, any additional information you think of, feel free to let me know.  You are the best!

Wow, that is an utterly shocking and incredible story, Nina! I have heard of astronomically high TSH levels like that a couple of times! You must have been utterly miserably hypo! :( I am so sorry for what you have gone through but very happy to see that you are a woman who knows how vital it is to not just blindly accept what the drs tell you and just take whatever pill you're told to take without researching everything about it!  am very glad that you posted for Risa and gave her a little more info re: what to expect! Thank you!

Risa, my T3 a month ago was around 90, which is also too low. The middle of the normal range is where it should be (at least). That would be around 140  My last week's one was 109 (my highest ever). But I still want to get it higher. Might be pretty tricky to stabilize you during this cycle so I think it's best to try to keep monitoring your labs (and just as important, how you FEEL!) and adjusting your meds accordingly.

As for endo's, I have not found one yet (after having tried 6!) that I feel like really "gets is". I think the reason is that there are other factors involved in how well our bodies absorb and utilize thyroid hormone, and most endo's do NOT get that. You should still try, though! Get a referral and go see one. Maybe you'll get a good one! (I pray!) But be prepared to find out that they can sometimes be WORSE than the GP's! I actually have a good GP now. He is really a rheumie/internist and I have been very happy with his tx of my thryoid!

Hang in there! You will get this all worked out! :)

Sherri I was miserable tired ect... I was so dizzy I called the Art nurse and said something is weird Im really dizzy she said me too and blew it off.. WTH... Come to find out in the end Lupron did it... One of the side effects was Dizziness.. Jaw pain.. and I had some but thought maybe I slept on it wrong chewed something wrong.. nope side effect of lupron.. But My Dr makes me think that I was an odd incidence.. hate that about them.. My Endo said after this you should move on and find someone you trust and who listens to his patient.. My Re wanted to blame Endo.. Like really he did his job he got my levels to 1.5 to 2.0...

Thanks for the kind words as well.. That's why we are all here so is to learn and to be knowledgeable of all experiences we all go through..And take it back to the Drs who think we should just settle for there holy word..lol (:

Nina, I am finally starting to feel better with increased meds, since I am sure bcp messed with my tsh, but I start Lupron on Wed.  I am going to watch my tsh like a hawk! I am asking my dr today to order tsh everytime I am getting blood work.  I don't know why they don't spend the time look at each of our individual before starting ivf protocol!!!  I can't thank you enough for your great information!
