PMD/ER VISIT!!

Jan 07, 2012 - 34 comments

From the day of my first BETA I was pessimistic and didn't want to get my hopes up because the beta was only 32 on 12/29 which put me at 11dpt.  But, I kept faith and carried on like I was pregnant regardless of the low BETA result. I was instructed by the RE not to worry and that I was a day early w/ testing.  I went back to the clinic at 16dpt for the 2nd beta on 1/3, BETA was 418 and as of 1/5 my BETA was 881 (18dpt). Last noc, I started bleeding and expelling clots which totally freaked DH and I out!!! I was extremely concerned being that the BROWN spotting had been present since New Years day but seemed to progress through out the week. My RE didn't seemed to be concerned and thought I should relax. Not only was I concerned about the baby/babies, I was now concerned about my own well being.

So last night DH and I decided to monitor the output over night. Around  2:00 am, I woke up very diaphoretic to the point where my hair, night gown, and sheets were soaked. I immediately went to the bathroom and found several small like clots in the commode. The one thing that puzzled me was I did not feel any abdominal cramps or pelvic discomfort. I knew my trip to the ER would be an excruciating wait so, I decided to see my PMD at 900 am this morning. At this point I was an emotional wreck!!!!

Once I arrived at my PMD's office, she had me POAS(POSITIVE). PMD also suggested I  have a PELVIC/ABD U/S and a  quantitative HCG level as well. My PMD contacted the hospital to give a full report and ordered all testing as STAT(Immediately). So, DH drove to the hospital like we're in an ambulance ! Once I arrived, the radiologist and a lab technician  were waiting to perform the testing

The first thing the radiologist said was due to the number of weeks we won't be able to confirm pregnancy. I explained that I was well aware of that but wanted to make certain that there weren't any other issues. The  PELVIC/ABD U/S did not reveal any abnormalities but prompted the radiologist to contact the PMD regarding a TRANSVAGINAL U/S.  The radiologist  R/O(ruled out) EC (ectopic pregnancy) and stated that my LT ovary could be hyper stimulated. The radiologist also stated that my LT ovary was sort of hiding behind my uterus and that could be the reason for the pain. Lastly, the radiologist stated there was no sign of pregnancy noted( as I already expected)!!

Finally, I spoke w/ my PMD whom stated she would say I had a M/C but the BETA was now 2657 !!!!  Well this concerned me!!!!  I was under the impression that you could see a gestational sac once the hCG level reached 1200. According to my PMD, the fetal age is no more than two or three weeks. I was told to come back to the her office on Monday for a follow up.  For now I am on bed rest, hopefully this will minimize or STOP the bleeding!!  I must admit I am more comfortable w/ my PMD than the RE. My PMD was really attentive to my emotional and health care needs. I am totally stressed and just want to have a healthy baby!!

ok just a thought.. maybe you couldn't see anything with your beta so high because there are more than one babies in there and that is what made it high.. not the gestational age???

I am sorry that you have to go through that.. I know how nerve wrecking waiting is.
But the good news is that you beta is rising beautifully and I have to agree with melimeli: it could be twins, so that's why the high number but no gest. sac yet.
I am praying for you and believing that everything will be ok!!!

Hey girls,  Yes this has been a trying experience. This is our third cycle and to finally get pregnant was just an awesome feeling. My last BETA was 881 on 1/5 so there was a significant increase!! I've realized patience is the key !!

Thank you for your continued support :)

I am scheduled to see my PMD on Monday for a repeat BETA. She would like to do an US on 1/11 despite the fact the RE scheduled one for  1/17. My PMD feels I should be monitored more closely  under the circumstances.

Keep the prayers coming!!! I really appreciate all of you :)

Did they do a vaginal u/s today?  I'm sorry, I guess I didn't follow very well.  Your numbers are looking great.  I guess it's just a matter of waiting.  How is the spotting?  Please, do bed rest and drink lots of water.  You have a whole army of women praying for you, your husband, and your baby(ies).  BELIEVE!!!

So sorry you are going through this... I think the not knowing what's going on with the baby(ies) is the worst! Sounds like your PMD is really good though and doing a lot more than the RE. Beta result look really good, just try to rest as much as possible until your next appointment. Keeping you in my prayers!

hey there, you keep yourself resting and take it easy, as as already been said it could be that there is more than one baby in there and that is why your BETA is so high, also I am sure that little girls have higher HCG levels than boys, though I can't remember why. The gestational sac is not normally visable till about 4 weeks pregnant, I found that out at the hospital as I have had many many early abdominal and trans vaginal ultrasound due to bleeding, you were right to be worried red bleeding and clots are not normal, but as you have said your BETA rose perfectly and this is reason for being hopeful, I wish you all the best and hope that you and your baby/babies will be ok. good luck :) xx

I am so praying that the little bean(s) are still there. Something is causing the BETA to rise!! I am almost positive that it's just too early. Do you all think they should have noted SOMETHING on the TRANSVAG at this point?  Are the results normal for this stage? I wouldn't say I expelled enough clots /bleeding that would be consisting w/ an M/C. Also, I haven't noted any unbearable abdominal pain. Actually, the abdominal cramps are mild. I'm just praying that it's just too soon to tell. Has anyone heard of a BETA still rising and there is no baby? Is this what we call a chemical pregnancy?

I truly thank you ladies for being here during this trying experience.  Let's continue to pray and hope for the best!!

no a chemical pregnancy is usually found when you have tested early and got a positive, then your period arrives as per usual or a couple of days late, the other reasons could be a molar pregnancy, or a blighted ovum, but with a blighted ovum the hcg levels usually rise slowly not a big jump like you have had, hopefully you will have more answers your next visit

Thank you for your input!! Going to the ER made a world of difference for me despite any nosocomial infections I might have contracted while there LOL!!! My PMD has been very attentive through this entire ordeal and I would prefer her over the RE any day. Sometimes it's just a matter of getting things around your psyche and gaining self-satisfaction!!!

Hope all is well :)

I just read your post, I'm sorry you are having to go through this experience.  I do also think its a good sign that your beta is rising so unfortunately it is just a matter of waiting - which is more aggravating I can imagine.  I will be praying for you and your bean (s) and hubby!! Hang in there!!

The only other thing I could think of is a blighted ovum, which I don't know a lot about, but have heard about them just a couple of times in my 2 1/2 years on here.   But, I believe , with you, that it is just to early.  I didn't have my first ultrasound until 5wks6days.  Your barely over 5 wks....  To early! !!  I really and truly believe that your upcoming ultrasound is going to show perfection!!!!!  I have no doubts!!!!!!  You are in each and everyone of our prayers!!!!!  Your success cannot be denied!!!  Hang in there my dear friend!! Awesome news is coming your way!!!  BELIEVE!!!!!!!!

MHV-

Yes I was thinking a blighted ovum as well!!  Just wondering would the Hcg level con't to rise that high if this was the case. I also wonder if the bleeding could be related to the progesterone suppositories.  Also, I am taking a prenatal vitamin w/ DHA/EPA. DHA acts as an anticoagulant so this could very well be causing the vaginal bleeding. I plan to discontinue the DHA to see if this will minimize the bleeding.

I have so.... much faith and feel in my heart everything is fine. How likely is a BLIGHTED OVUM when the egg was fertilized w/ ICIS. I was under the impression that the BEST sperm was selected to fertilize the egg. We transferred (2) 8 cell and a cell 6 cell!!  They all were of pretty good quality and grade.

Hang in there, sweetie! I am so sorry for your ordeal! We are all praying hard for you on here! I'm with the ladies who are thinking twins. That would explain your betas climbing so quickly and why you would still not see anything on u/s! I can't wait for your next u/s! I really believe you are going to get some awesome news!!!!

Oh yay! I was just wracking my brain trying to think of things. But, seriously, I just think your a spotter like me. I am spotting again today. I am taking my progesterone every other day (shots) and I notice it's usually after my shots. I am going on about 3 weeks of spotting on and off... I just think you are the same as me. Mine was even a little maroon today. But, it stopped. We just need to lean on each other, and know that our babies are safe. Hugs!!!

Just to answer your question on blighted ovum.  All that really is is another name for a miscarriage.  In the case of  a blighted ovum, a sac develops, but the fetus does not, so essentially what you get is an empty sac.  But there was nothing visible at all right?

Remember too that how soon they see anything on the u/s can really vary.  When it's that early, quality of the equipment, skill of the tech, etc. can make a difference.  Just to give you an example..with my last loss, the first u/s tech didn't see anything.  That's why they diagnosed me with an etopic pregnancy.  The second u/s (the very next day) a different tech using different equipment did see the sac.  Now, in my case it was an easy diagnoses as my hcg levels were dropping.  In your case, it's very early and your levels are rising nicely.  So it's too soon to say this is a loss and I'm glad they aren't telling you that.  You could go back and very well see everything developing nicely.

I had bleeding much like yours in my pregnancy with Ryder.  It was actually quite heavy.  It turned out I had a hematomma.  It didn't hurt him and just eventually bled itself out, but sure was scary to see.  Remember there are so many things that can cause bleeding like that and not all are bad.

I know this waiting is sheer torture.  But hang in there, with rising levels there is every chance this could be just fine.  Continuing to keep you in my prayers.

Oh gosh. I just realized that my explanation could have come across as condescending, and that was not my intent at all.  I kinda became obsessed with miscarriages, causes, etc. when I was having my own struggles.  I apologize if I came across that way.

Keep the faith pray over your self and those babies and I will be praying for you as well. Talk to God about it and pray to him for your healing and that the bleeding will stop. Put your babies in God hands and let him worry and deal with it. I know its easier said then done. But thats where our faith come in to play we have to trust and put our faith in God that he will carry us through this.

You have so many people giving you support right now, I'm also praying for you and crossing my fingers that soon you hear your good news.

I had what they called a "blighted ovum" for one of my m/c's so I can help you out a little bit with that one.   first let me say....doesn't sound like you are having one.

with mine, the numbers doubled for the first 3 betas.   Then I had an u/s at 5 weeks 3 days and all they saw was an empty sac.    We started the betas again and I was around 3500.    the dr. thought that the number seemed okay for being 5 weeks, so I was sent home to just "worry".    We monitored the beta numbers for another week and while they did keep rising, they never doubled.   the beta numbers did reach the 7000 mark before they started falling, but it took "another" week.    all in all, it was almost 3 full torturous weeks before anyone said....yep, this isn't going to work.  I knew in my heart because the numbers rose sooooo slow, but that's not happening to you, so don't let anyone tell you this isn't going just fine.   Sure its normal to be concerned if they aren't seeing anything, but that ABSOLUTELY could be due to faulty equipment, in-experience of u/s tech....or just a day.    you would be amazed how teeny tiny these beans are when they first start out and how just 1 day makes all the difference in the world in seeing them on an u/s machine.

your numbers are doubling and rising beautifully and what other than a perfect pregnancy could explain that?    Have faith, all your sisters are here on this site hoping and praying for you.

I look forward to hearing the good news.
