The most common join injury is a sprain. A sprain occurs when the ligaments and tendons around a joint are stretched. In a severe sprain, these tissues may be torn. A sprain is often accompanied by painful swelling of the joint. The blood vessels and muscles around the joint may also be injured. A sprain results when the joint is moved too far, often from a sudden, unexpected twist or from too much pressure. A twisted ankle is a common example of a a sprain. Another type of joint injury is a dislocation. In a dislocation, the ends of the bone are pulled out of the joint. The ligaments connected to the joint are severely stretched or torn. Dislocation of the shoulder joint is a common injury. The dislocated bone ends must be placed back into position and held in place with a bandage or cast until the tissues held.The cartilage in joints is often damaged. Cartilage can be torn if the joint receives a strong blow. The resulting swelling may not allow free movement in the joint. Torn cartilage is a serious condition, usually requiring surgical removal or all or part of the damaged cartilage. cartilage tears are all too common in the knees, particularly among football players.

Not all joint problems are caused by an injury. Bursitis is a joint problem that may not be directly related to an injury. Bursitis is the painful inflammation of small sacs located near joints. These sacs, called bursae, lie between tendons or between tendons and bones. Without these sacs, the tendons would rub against each other. After an injury or infection, or because of overuse, the bursae sometimes becomes inflamed. Bursitis is very common in the shoulder and the knee. Treatment for mild cases includes resting that part of the body, heat, and painkillers. Injections of medicine, or surgery, are sometimes used in more serious cases.
