parathyroid surgery

I went to see a surgeon today who says I need to have parathyroid surgery.  I have been on dialysis for 5 1/2 years, which at times, I had to be hospitalized for severe infections, low sodium levels, catherer placement for peritoneal dialysis, left kidney removed.  I have restless leg syndrome (severe), back and neck pains, bi-polar disorder, as well as renal failure.  I really don't want this surgery (there is a chance of him cutting my vocal chord nerve, which would leave me speaking with a hoarse tone (and only above a whisper) for the rest of my life.  Seems like I'm falling apart!

so sorry to hear of your possible upcoming surgery.  Have you actually taken the time to sit and discuss all your concerns with your doc yet?  I know he probably told you that you need it done and if he's anything like my doc, he's walking to the door.  Write down a list of your concerns and make an appt. with him.  I did and am glad I did bcz I was so nervous about my hip replacement surgery that I almost cancelled it.  He took the time to answer all my questions and reassured that the risks were very small and since I had been in severe pain and could no longer walk, it was necessary.  So glad I did it.

Are you taking anything for the RLS?  I have it and omg it is so bad at night if I forget to take my meds.  I've tried the RLS meds out there and they didn't work as well as neurontin.  I also have nerve pain and it takes care of that to-it's a 2 for one sale, lol.  No seriously might want to give it a try.  I now sleep like a baby.
