C SPINE

It has taken 19 years for the doctors to finally explain what was happening to me.  I have a large spur on the c3-4 and a congenital fusion at the c5-6.  I had fuzzy vision, nerve palsy on right side of face.  I even had double vision when lying down.  With no answers in the beginning, it was a nightmare.  We retired to a small central Texas town, and my prayers were answered.  I had such horrible buzzing on the right side of my head.  Some Drs.told me it was migranes and some told me it was tension headaches.  I had never had headaches in my life.  I became so ill I gave up my career.  My husband even doubted me as he was even confused, as we were partners in life, and now I couldn't do anything.  Now the pain is in the right occipital area in the back of my head down through the right shoulder. I was even told it was fibromyalgia.  What a laugh. I would stumble when I would get up to walk, and sometimes get so dizzy.  Now I have a shrunk esophagus, and sharp pain that goes up into the back of my head especially if I lay wrong and pressure is put against the neck.  I was told a year ago it would be too dangerous to do surgery, but now things are getting worse.  The spells put me in bed and finally the neurosurgeon in San Angeo Texas did a mylogram.  He is to put spacers in the c3-4 area and fuse the 6-7.  I have lived with this all my life.  A whiplash at the age of 24 began a long series of trips to the doctors.  I had severe dizzy spells by the time I was 14.  There wasn't an answer.  When I was 45 things got real bad.  Now I am 64 and am ready to get my life back.  I pray that this story will help someone out there that has these symptoms and does not know what is wrong.  YOU ARE NOT CRAZY.  GET TO ONE OF THE BEST NEUROSURGEONS YOU CAN FIND.  GOOD LUCK.

Good day, I am sorry to hear of your suffering.  Too many people suffer from these sorts of things.  I write this because I know the general public (and doctors as well) have little understanding of the devastating effects of having a damaged spine.  As a chiropractor it is our intent to help manage spinal function and alignment therefore minimizing the effects on the spinal cord and nerves (a major health problem for many people).  Wheels on any vehicle that are "out of alignment" will wear unevenly, and will wear out many times faster than properly aligned wheels.  The same principle holds true for your spine.  If your spine is "out of normal alignment" and does not function properly, it too will degenerate before its time.  The difficulty is that this condition (often called subluxation by chiropractors) affects the nerves going to various tissues including organs.  When the connection between your brain and any cell or tissue is interrupted, your body is not at ease and malfunctions.  That is why chiropractors wish for people to get their spines checked even if they don't have overt symptoms like pain.  The reason is, usually by the time a person has enough damage to create pain and other weird symptoms, the problem has been there for years, which makes it very difficult to treat.  Case in point.  I wish you well and even though your case seems very severe, I'd still recommend a thorough consultation by a chiropractor, whether they may be able to help you with that specific part of the spine or not.  As well, there are other chiropractic techniques which may be more suited to your specific case.  Best of luck,
Dr. Gervais
