CT

Computed tomography (CT) or CAT scan, uses a rotating X ray tube and computer to obtain thin sections of the body. It is especially useful in cases of head injury and stroke. It is best investigation to detect acute hemorrhage and calcification anywhere in the body. It is also good to evaluate cortical bone.
Although it is non-invasive it uses ionizing radiation. although three dimensional reconstructions are possible it doesnt give direct multiplanar images.
It may require use of an iodianted contrast which may be toxic to kidneys in very high doses and can cause idiosynratic reactions in some (especially asthmatics, diabetics, cardiac patients etc). Metallic objects like coins, dentures etc may cause artefacts in the images.

Women should inform if there is any possibility that they are pregnant, as the examination involves radiation which is harmful to the fetus.

When do people use CT versus MRI? If one is better should a patient try and get the better one always?

Thanks for the information.

generally speaking for most of the craniospinal indications MRI is preferred. However, inc ases of head injury and suspicion of an acute intracranial bleed CT is preferred. Also if the pt has a cardiac pacemaker, or any contraindication to MRI the metallic foreign body cochlear
implants CT is used.

Also for lung pathologies CT is the preferred investigation.

I have been having bloating, feeling full, light headed, dizzy. I burp all the time but it is not reflux. I have pain behind my lower ribs on the left side. I have also lost over 10lbs. I went to my gastro and he did a abdominal CT. 3 days later I have these coin shaped red raised itchy rashes. on my shins, shoulders and by my ribs. They don't hurt but itch and are a little bigger than quarter sized and they are red raised bumps. Could this be some kind of reaction to the CT/Barrium/iodine? I have not ate anything different or strange or out of the ordinary. Could this also be a problem related to my gastro issue. I do not have the results of the CT yet.

I have been feeling light headed, not really so much dizzy and head spinning but a feeling of like taking 2-4mg of Xanax. I have some head aches that generally start in my shoulder and move up to my lower neck but can be resloved by a good massage or come BC Powder. This all started about 7 days ago then accompanied by flu like symptoms, body aches, chills, etc. I went to the ER because i was sweating like crazy and had a head ache so they wanted to do a head CT. They said the head CT was normal. Would this scan have should something crazy like tumors or lesions. Should i not be so worried anymore. The ER doc said this could be symptoms of a virus working its way through my system or it could be do to stress.
