What is the long term affects of Ataxia? Is this a terminal disease? How does it progress?

My Aunt is 70 yrs old and she has fibromyalgia and arthritis. Three months ago she started to fall, "my legs just gave out". She has had to go in to a nursing home and was told she has ataxia. What started this? Does it have anything to do with the fibro? Anxious to know because I also have fibro, 60 yrs old. Will this happen to me?
