When the sun goes down tonight, step outside and look south.  Beaming through the twilight is one of the prettiest things you'll ever see--a tight three-way conjunction of Venus, Jupiter and the crescent Moon.  The event is visible from all parts of the world, even from light-polluted cities.  People in New York and Hong Kong will see it just as clearly as astronomers watching from remote mountaintops. Only cloudy weather or a midnight sun (sorry Antarctica!) can spoil the show.

The great conjunction offers something extra to Europeans. For more than an hour on Monday evening, the crescent Moon will actually eclipse Venus. Astronomers call such an event a "lunar occultation." Venus emerging from the dark edge of the Moon is a remarkably beautiful sight.  Sky watchers across Europe will be able to see this happen.

We saw the moon and what we called "two other stars" as we were hiking into the sunset tonight and then while driving over the bay bridge towards San Francisco. It was an amazing view and knowing that these were Venus and Jupiter makes it even more so. Thank you for the info.

Its actually been happening for about 10 day's now, with the three getting ever so closer. Tonight is the peak.
I saw something similar some years back on a clear night and it was extra special indeed. We just got slammed with 10" of the glorious white stuff last night to go with the 7" we already had and they are forecasting more. My powers been out for the last 16 hours !! Glad to have it back !!

I doubt if I'll be able to witness the event myself due to the gloomy snow laden sky's. (Pout, Cry) ;(     lol !     Hopefully some of you will see a great show ! Maybe take some photos? Maybe put 'em up for all the MedHelp Homeys to see? lol .. OK...Enough of the "Hint, Hint" B.S. ---- ENJOY THE SHOW !!  ...And if I may be so bold as to suggest....  When your gazing upon the wonders this fascinating life has to offer, say a prayer for all those who are suffering out in the world. That they may find pain free peace, healing and serenity. Pray to the conjunction as your higher power if you wish !! They certainly are much larger and Higher than us!!  lol   Peace and clear sky's to you ... Burrrrrrrr patch

Which planet is which?

by April2, Dec 01, 2008 07:36PM
I just saw it! I had to take my daughter to work and she works up on top of a high hill so I got a good view of it! It's too cool! My teenage son looked it up and said it will be 40 years before we see it again, so I don't know if I'll see another one or not!

Ours is a frowny face. :( No fair! I wish we had the smiley face! :)

Thanks for letting us know, Burpatch. I don't understand why this wasn't in the news more??? No one I know knew about it!

by Burrpatch, Dec 01, 2008 08:12PM
To Tanty2 : Although i cannot see it, my guess is that Venus would be the bright intense one, closest to the Moon. Saturn, though much, much bigger is much, much farther away. Big, but not so bright. I see Venus often, and its always like a bright pinpoint that brighter than anything in the sky. Save the Moon and the occasional "Garbage" that burns in our atmosphere after the astronauts on the space shuttle scuttle butt it !!  lol !!  .... Burrrrrrrr Patch                         P.S. Anyone know 100% ?

by NautyOne, Dec 01, 2008 08:33PM
WoW !!........all I saw was the stunning layer of FOG we have had for a week !!       dang it

by Burrpatch, Dec 01, 2008 08:36PM
lol !! April, April !! You ought to know more than most that in order to "Find" something unique and precious that YOU should "Seek" it. You cannot count on the propaganda networks to cue you in to something as silly and shallow as a couple of planets and some space !! I mean C'mon.. they have much more important things to brainwash you with. There is no time for dreamers who look to God's Heavens for wonderment, hope and inspiration !!  .. lol   I'd better stop now, before my light - hearted satire becomes ranting !! Ha Ha !!

Glad you got a chance to see it April !! 40 years 'fore it happens again eh ? Hmmmm.. lemme see ...I'll be 87 years old.   I wonder if I'll need glasses by then.!!!  lol      .... Burrrrrrpatch

by April2, Dec 01, 2008 08:42PM
I know! I'll be 83! So this may be my last one to see! Thanks again for letting us know about this! And I don't mind your ranting, lol.
