Racist Cats???

Sep 18, 2007 09:36PM - 9 comments

Here's an interesting tidbit for all you catophiles out there. Did you know cats are incredibly racist?

We tend to get a lot of them around here, have 12 right now until the "kitty truck" shows up and takes away the extras.
So, we've noticed that they tend to group up according to coloration. The greys all band together, the whites, the blacks...those that are mixed color tend to be more accepted if they've got one color dominant over the others.
The 1/2 and 1/2's tend to be impartial, not really forming a group...which in itself is a grouping.

This all started with what I call "The terror triplets". An all black mother cat with two all black daughters. These three have been here a while, and rule the room with an iron fist.

When a non-black cat comes in, they gang up on it and torment it relentlessly. Eventually we call a "detente" and try to calm things down.

I wonder, if the original black mother cat hadn't been so prejudiced, perhaps her two children wouldn't have learned this behavior as well? Perhaps this was the start of the whole cycle.

It's like having little kitty prison gangs running about the room and yard... we can't turn our back without one shanking the other for wearing colors.

And we can't disarm them, since we consider declawing inhumane...

We have an old mixed white/ black cat who just came into the room, more white than black. The old fellow has stolidly ignored all there attempts at baiting toward racial violence.

Perhaps a moment in history has arrived?

A true "Martin Luther King" among the cat world?

We shall see...he's already struck up an uneasy friendship with the dominant mostly black-some-white male.
This could be the beginning of racial harmony in the cat world!!!

I really needed to laugh - and that was just the thing!!
Thank you!

Hey - are those cats all at your house?
You don't live in some tiny, walk up, Manhattan apt do you??

Good luck with the racial harmony!!

We're in a mid-sized studio, but we have the advantage of private access to a "back yard" area that's fully walled in. So we have our three, and we usually only foster two to three others normally, who come and go for a few days/ weeks.
We take more in emergencies, usually just holding them until they get "shipped off" (to Iraq?!?! No, just to good homes or colonies).

In the winter, though, we have to stick to just a few in the cold weather. Not fair to ask them to stay outside. Although the last two winters have been pretty warm. Probably why there's so many strays!

Back in the 60's we had a black cat we named Eldridge (Cleaver). When our aunt from the south came up to visited she really liked our cat. Petting it she asked; "whats his name?"  We said Eldridge, Eldridge Cleaver. So she just said Oh, and pushed it off her lap. So the moral of the story is that cats cause racism, right?

I met a guy in the Bahama's who had a dog he trained to chase black people. It would run after the kids and woman and nip at their heels. Come to think of it, that wasn't funny. He was a racist *******.

On a funnier note, we have a new inmate. The others are shocked and dismayed at a new inmate. He's a big orange guy with huge paws, I'd guess 7 years. He stomped in and promptly claimed a niche of territory on the bed and defends against all comers. All have backed down when it came to a challenge.

Except for one; our docile, sweet, Nighteyes (all black, incredibly waddley fat cat). I caught her chasing him out of the bathroom yesterday. I was impressed, both that she stood up to him, he backed down, AND she could actually move all that weight just that fast!

I don't know about cats, but there is actual research showing that certain birds are racist...

Animals are definitely into the "us vs. them" mentality. Although I wonder if it's less to do with color prejudice and more recognition that others are different from the group.
Birds are some of the most violent creatures I've ever met. I'm terrified of parrots (well, terrified may be too strong a word, perhaps "wary"). I've never met a parrot that hasn't tried to take a chunk out of me. *shudder*

I'm of the opinion that parrots don't like the Irish. It's the only explanation...the racist-beaked bums!!!

I thought animals were color blind.......
