Anterior Fusion

So, I'm almost 3 wks out and I'm so afraid the surgery didn't work.  I've been hurting all day, even with meds.  I sit for 2 minutes and it hurts so bad when I stand up.  My husband keeps telling me I'm not giving it enough time, but my body knows it was feeling better just a week or so ago.  Things aren't right, I'm sure.  I feel like I just gave over my body to be eviscerated to have my back fixed and put back together only to not be "fixed".  I know they say the anterior approach for a spinal fusion is best, but I look at myself and I feel like I've been butchered front and back.

I'm so discouraged right now.  I can't stop crying and no one understands.  My poor husband's patience is growing thin and he's been such a sweetheart.

What do I do?  My doctor said everything looks like it's in place and right, but why do I feel so bad?

It's really early to be expecting so much from your body.  I had two cervical surgeries myself years ago - one anterior and the other posterior.  Finally ended up fused and plated from C5 to C7.  Just like you, I expected to be 'fixed' and I wasn't.  It was my own fault as it turned out.  I didn't do the physical therapy/ rehab work because it hurt too much.

With any kind of orthopedic surgery, you MUST do the rehab work or you stand the chance of being worse off than before the surgery.  Rehab is terribly painful and unfortunately most docs undertreat pain related to physical therapy.  Most of them don't tell you how important rehab is and what to expect pain-wise after surgery.  That's when the real work begins.  If you let your muscles atrophy, you put that much more stress on your skeletal system and experience even worse pain.

Surgery is a two-part process.  The surgeon cuts; then the patient suffers through weeks or months of rehab and finally heals. When the doc says "recovery in 6 weeks" that only means you can start doing some of your old activities without wrecking the surgical work he's done.  It never means that you'll be back to your old self in that time.

I don't know exactly what you had done, but spinal fusion surgery HURTS.  There's no such thing as a pain med that knocks out the pain - particularly bone pain. My worst problem post-op was muscle spasms.  No amount of pain meds or muscle relaxants touched it.  What did help was hot baths and floating in the swimming pool.  Being in the water takes the gravity off the body and the pain melts away.  Of course, getting out is another story, but it's soooo good while you're in there.  Water therapy is the top of the line as far as physical therapy is concerned.  Are your wounds healed enough to float in a bathtub yet?

If you're concerned about being submerged, try the Nexcare brand large bandages.  They are waterproof, and made of Tegaderm which still allows for oxygen exchange.  I've had too many surgeries to count in my life, and Nexcare bandages are the best thing I've ever found for wound care and protection.  Lots better than my old-time method of plastic bags and duct tape just to take a shower.  :-D
