Water in the Dryer .... !

Jun 22, 2012 - 16 comments

A few minutes ago, my fire detectors went off chirping oddly.. beep beep beep . .beepbeepbeep!

Upon investigation, one of my kids loaded the dryer upstairs (right above the detector going off) with tons of wet towels that hadn't finished rinsing/spinning in the washing machine!  Therefore, my dryer became a washing machine tub instead of an appliance aimed at efficiently drying even the wettest items!  Needless to say, the water seeped out of the dryer barrel, onto the floor, and right through the baseboards adorning my living room ceiling, while narrowly missing my TV, VCR, electronic equipment.

Mopped up the mess from the dryer, rinsed the towels in the washer, but not quite sure how to get a good night's sleep with residual beep beep beep all night long................And no way are those towels being dried tonight LOL.

Oh boy.  LOL  Well, on one hand, it is awesome that they were trying to be responsible and do some laundry for ya.  On the other . . .   darn, I hate when it is easier to just do something yourself!   I hope the beeping stops soon.

While this is funny in a way . . .  I know it really isn't funny.  Glad it missed your electronics!

Oh, I know that chirp sound.  Our smoke detectors are all on an electrical system and we have no idea why but once in a while they will all start chirping at a specific interval. Chirp chirp.  3 minutes goes by.  Chirp chirp.  It is maddening.

I hope that your dryer is going to be okay.  Will it run now?

Anyway, if you have luck like mine, these things always happen when you are already dead tired.  Hope you get some sleep!

Hope you get some sleep!

Ya, I think there is something else going on.  A dryer is a pretty big self contained drum.  Even a ton of water should stay in the dryer.  Something else might have happened.  Check the hose connections to the washer and the drain from the washer.  For the water to go through the ceiling (and probably short out the wiring) - onto the bottom floor --thats a lot of water.  I really doubt it came from the dryer - but kids do the darndest things.

We once had a customer call to say her dryer was broken, because there was water coming out of it.  When we got there to repair it, we found out that the dryer really was fine, but the washer wasn't spinning properly so didn't get the water out.  The woman was stupid enough to put dripping wet clothes into the dryer, thinking it could get that much water out!!  Fortunately, her's was in the basement, though, so didn't do any harm.

There should be a way to disable the fire alarm, but on the other hand - be thankful that it alerted you to a problem.

Anyway, it's morning, now and I hope you got some sleep.  Chirp, chirp.

Time to dry the completely spun-out towels!  Wish me luck this morning!   When I tilted the dryer last night, a puddle of water drained out ... So I guess the next large load of wash will tell-all where this liquid came from!

Not knowing your dryer i'm guessing water went through the exhaust vent and the dryer door because the door isn't water tight like a washer. as for the smoke alarm if it had a battery remove it or if it's hard wired just remove 1 wire or some of them you just unplug.

Ha, just remember to plut it back in!  Once during a late night of insane chirping, I unplugged ours and forgot for a bit until my husband asked me about it.  Oops.  Don't want to go very long without smoke detectors ready to work when necessary.

Hope the dryer worked well after the 'incident' and all is well now.

Thanks everyone forthr super advice!
All is folded nicely without further incident!!

My husband will look at the vent to be sure all is okay ... Last night all hoses seemed ok

We were a bit afraid to touch the electric alarm without turning off the master switch, but by 1:00 am it settled down and went silent!!!!  The alarms are all attached throughout the house and are also carbon monoxide sensors !

Humor certainly reduces the seriousness of all!  However best of luck in this wet weather. Hope you catch up on your rest. When you reach my age you will look back and wonder how you did so well with the children challenges! And
know you were Blessed.
