seizures and sleeping

Mar 03, 2008 01:52PM - 2 comments

Well today is day six on depakote er.  I am so tired of not sleeping.  I wonder when I will get a good nights sleep.  I think I would rather have a seizure than not sleep at all.  I hate this.  I am trying everything and nothing is working.  Why???????

Eileen,   I was diagnosis with Epilepsy in 1998..had seizures (Grand Mull) on a regular basis, just all of a sudden they appeared one evening serving dinner, I hit the floor and started seizing.....This went on for 2 years and I also tried everything, Depakote, Neurotin, Topamax just to name a few....then I read about this diet..Ketogentic Diet.  I started it, increased my calcium....(Which is one of the most important factors in keeping our circuts if you will from overloading).  I have been medication free and seizure for the past 8 years.  So don't give up!!!!  Get your calcium levels checked out!!!!  As a woman in my fourties too, you'd be amazed how much of a vital part this plays.  Don't become a ginny pig for any Neurologist!  You are not a statistic!!!!!!  If you can't sleep, have them change your meds and increase you calcium to 1000 mg a day and also vitamin D adds in distributing your calcium.  Lack of sleep and stress can also trigger seizures.  Keep in touch. Hang in there you are not alone and YES you can beat this! (Smile)

Thank you.  That was very nice and helpful.  It's weird because i had a granmal seizure and during my eeg I had a seizure and di not even know it.  That was the only way they were able to determine that I have a seizer disorder.  They seem to think I have probably been having them for years.  I did have some episodes years ago that now I might be able to say they are seizures.  Do I need to keep taking this medication or you said you controlled it by calcium and diet.  What exactly did you do.  Also after some blood work my pmc said I was in menapause but that was at the same time I had a toxic dose of topomox in my system.  I have some other health issues that might be related but i'm not sure.  Anyway another sleepless night.  I just don't know how many more nights I can go without sleeping good.  It has been three months since I had a decent nights sleep.  I do alot of twitching that i think might be waking me up but not sure.  I've tried all the usual steps to sleep, warm milk, excersise, mask on my eyes, quiet.  Nothing not even lunesta is helping right now.  do you think if put in the hospital they will put me to sleep.  My neuro says he will put me in the hospital if I don't get some sleep soon.
