Good and Bad (?) News - Gulp, rising CA-125

Jan 14, 2009 08:58AM - 5 comments

I accompanied my mum for a medical check-up today. Well, good and bad news. The good news is that there is no change to the 0.5 cm 'undeterminate lump' in her breast. And mum agreed to see a breast specialist in Apr and would take the lump out.

The bad news is that my mum's CA-125 went up. Her CA-125 was never in single digit since the end of the chemo treatment 9 months ago. It fluctuates between 12-15 but today the CA-125 went up to 18.5 which is not within my mum's 'normal' range. The oncologist is concerned enough to suggest a CT scan today but unfortunately my mum just ate before her doctor's appointment. I am not really happy when the CT-Scan is being postponed to to the 2nd week of Feb but mum did not really want a CT-scan now since it is near to Chinese New Year and we have a series of activities planned.

I hoped it is not a upward trend - and I am hoping that the upward rise is a result of the stomache she had yesterday. I know that any kind of illnesses could lead to an upward rise to CA-125 but I am unable to get my mum's appointment change to a later date.

Hey Pink...sorry to read this.  = (

I hope it was just a fluke, too.

It is so good that she has a doctor who is on top of things.  My thoughts will be with her and hoping that it is nothing.  Take care, Trudie

:-(

The only good thing is that the oncologist whom I call 'laid back' takes the upward trend seriously. If my mum has not eaten before the appointment, he would have ensured my mum would get a CT-scan done immediately after we walked out of the office.

After he saw the CA-125 report, he really examined my mum and took a long time  'tapping' her stomach (checking for water) and concluded that my mum had a lot of 'air' inside her. He knew that my mum had hernia and he said he did not want to take a chance in case that the hernia lump turned up to be something wrong with the lymph nodes which according to him, is one of the places easiest to overlook. He also examined my mum's weight the past 1 year and asked my mother whether she could still wear her pants comfortably or whether she noticed her tummy getting bigger.

When a 'laid back' doctor suddenly starts to poke around, it is really alarming.

I will be putting your Mum in my prayers  I would try to talk her into getting the CT Scan immediately. I stopped everything I was doing on Dec. 23rd to have mine done.  Perhaps she can find one celebration she could miss for a hour or two.

Pink:

Can tell by your "voice" that you are concerned.  I'd try to get a CT scan for your mom earlier if possible.  Hopefully it IS just some other ailment she had that caused the rise but, if the CA125 is an accurate indicator for her, a quick CT would be peace of mind for you and probably your mom as well.  Praying for her (and you too).
