Just Venting

Mar 06, 2008 03:06PM - 6 comments

I just have to vent. I am so fed up with my doctors. I am trying really hard to be proactive, but when you keep getting hit with incompetence and inconsideration, it is just so frustrating!  Got my blood work back and my hemoglobin, hematocrit and red blood cells are below the chart.  That might explain my fatigue and shortness of breath.  I would really like to find out why I am so anemic though.  I am not bleeding anymore (period wise) and I eat right!  Also fed up with my gynocologist.  Got my latest ultrasound results (which the nurse called in to me and said was normal, no worries) but the radiologist recommends an MRI and a follow up ultrasound. The doctor doesn't want to do anything!  I feel I am doing all the things I should be doing to find out what is the cause of all my symptoms, I am eating right so I won't be constipated, but still am, taking my vitamins, have no clue why I have the uti symptoms, but no uti.  Anyway, just so frustrated.  I have a colonoscopy scheduled the end of March. Waiting to see what that shows and then back to the gynocologist.

On an upbeat note, I have so much to be thankful for, a wonderful fiance, great kids (although not always lol) and great friends! That means alot!

Gather up your records and if not happy with your GYN,  get a second opinion, and hopefully then get the answers you need to answer your concerns.  It can be so frustrating to know that something is not right, not have the ability yourself to tell what is wrong, have tests that show inconclusive reports and have a variety of answers from the medical experts.  My daughter takes Mirolax for her constipation, it is an OTC mixture and it has worked so well for her.  Just the vitamines alone can cause constipation. Especially those with a large dose of Iron.  Drink plenty of fluids, cranberry juice does help with the UTI's also.  Good Luck  Marty

Thank you Marty,
This gyn is my second opinion! But I do think it is hard when you go to a doctor that hasn't known you for a long time, so that they know you are not just overreacting (which is what I think he thinks)  I do have all my reports and I have contacted some local people in my area (Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Florida) because they were so helpful to me once before and they have responded back.  I might be able to get a referral from them. I will have to wait now until Monday to call them.

Thanks for the advice of the Miralax.  I have been drinking lots of fluids, including cranberry juice.  Like I said, it feels like a UTI, but it never is. It comes and goes.  I have taken Uristat if it is really bothering me.

I feel I am heading in the right direction with the colonoscopy and a referral to the gyn/onc.  If I can get in to see one, I will feel alot better just knowing that I am in the right hands.  My low hemoglobin/red blood cells is really affecting me and I need to find out why I am so low.  One day at a time.  Thanks for your reply!

You haven't mentioned Leslee in a while, I hope that she is doing well.

Dear Ivfrogs/Colleen, :-)

You HAVE TO KEEP at it all, because nobody is going to look out for you but you!  You learn a lot going through all this stuff.  My GYN sent me home for another whole year to go by and it's my FAMILY DOCTOR that is pushing to get things taken care of RIGHT.  If it wasn't for her sending me for all these tests I would have NEVER KNOWN I now have a COMPLEX Cyst with a SOLID MASS on my right ovary that USE TO JUST BE A CYST.  Now my left is starting right out with a COMPLEX Cyst and is a good size already compared to how my right ovary problems started back in Sept 2006!  There's also something that showed up in my left kidney that "may" be a stone that could pass, but further imaging is needed to know for sure.  All that and my TOTALLY MESSED UP Uterus FULL of PAINFUL FIBROIDS and the wall is thickening as well.  It's all CRAZY how we have to LOOK OUT FOR OURSELVES AND DO A LOT OF RESEARCH AND HOMEWORK so we can take care of OURSELVES and do it all right.  PREVENTION is a word we ALL KNOW, but unfortunately not all doctors care enough to make the right steps to proper care for their patients.  I think it's SAD that we almost have to be DOCTORS to get things done right.  Insurances make it impossible for doctors in a way, because in a lot of cases we have to KNOW all the right questions and TESTS to ask about concerning our own health.

You're not alone in your frustartion girl and we are SO BLESSED with sites like these to bring us all together.

Later my friend have a Blessed one.  :-D

I so feel for you and your frustration.  I am 3 weeks into this, have finally gotten my GP to give me the right tests to determine it is a problem with my ovaries and am now waiting to get into the gynecologist.  We are fortunate here in Canada that our medical care is free but we do have such a shortage of doctors that we are underserviced and you are lucky to get one at all.  It makes it very difficult to get what you want as you can't threaten to go to another doctor.  I'm a business woman who is used to making things happen and I hate that I can't do so in my own healthcare.

Take care and good luck.

Hello Trudie,
I just saw this, sorry, I am not good at looking at everything.  It is hard for me to remember that someone might read my journal, lol.

It is good that your medical care is free but I imagine the frustration that comes from waiting to see a doctor and as you say, you can't threaten to go to another doctor.  It is always something, isn't it?  I have personal insurance (as compared to work insurance) but it stinks and all my tests, doctor visits etc. are costing me a fortune.  It plays into what tests I am willing to have etc.

What tests is you GP doing?  and when do you see the gyn doctor?

I hope that you are feeling better today.  Let me know how you are!

Hi Colleen.  Because I have had my entire large colon removed and then had rebuild surgery to replace my rectum due to ulcerative colitis, all my insides are different than other people's.  My family doctor who I originally went to is one of those doctors who treats you with meds for a simple thing and then if you come back he goes further.  So when I went in he prescribed me with ulcer drugs and sent me for an abdominal ultrasound.  That came back saying I had a 7 cm cyst on left ovary but he didn't believe it as he thought they might have been viewing my rebuilt pouch from my intestinal surgery.  So he sent me for a CT scan but that was scheduled two weeks out.  I then really bloated up and got more pain so went back in and he got the scan moved up to last Thursday.  He is on holidays this week so one of the other doctors called me in Monday to advise of another cyst on my right ovary and a uteran fibroid.  He started the process to get me into a gyno ASAP but here it is Friday and still no appointment as the gyno has not had time to review my records.  In the mean time my symptoms are getting worse so went back to my doctor's office and saw on call doctor who said ovarian problems don't cause my symptoms (I managed to keep my mouth shut but really should have blasted him) and he sent me for an x-ray on Wednesday.  I have been dealing with doctors for the last month and all I wanted from the beginning was to see a gyno.  So frustrating.  I am not focusing on work like I should have, am worried I will be booked for surgery once I do get an appointment and get seen, and need to travel on business next week which stresses me because a) none of my clothes fit me with this bloating and b) I just know he's finally going to get me in when I need to be away.  Thanks for letting me vent.

So sorry that these damn things are costing you money.  That is just not fair.

All the best,
Trudie
