Ultrasound - 5 weeks, 6 days

So I had my scan today.  I had an internal one because my uterus is retroverted and the tummy scans never show much.

So we saw a gestation sac and yolk sac but no fetal pole yet.  They kept yacking on about how early I am at 5 weeks, 6 days and it's too early to see the fetal pole blah blah blah.

But when I had my first scan with Ruby at 6 weeks exactly, everything was there - fetal pole and heartbeat and that was only one day later than what I am now.

I know every pregnancy is different but I can't help but compare.

I feel so deflated :(

Next scan is scheduled for a weeks time so I will be 6 weeks, 6 days.  If they don't see a heartbeat then, then I guess it's all over.

On the bright side I got my heparin shots and start them tonight.

Great news!! I bet you see your lil bean next scan!! My re never expects hb's before 7wks. Stay positive I know it's hard but just remember that this baby could have implanted later then Ruby did and that's why no fetal pole yet. Seeing the yolk sac is very reassuring. I was told that if there was no baby there wouldn't be a yolk sac. Baby is so small I remember my first scan and all we saw was a little speck and baby grows so fast, I know you know alot of this I'm just trying to get you to stay positive! Love you

With my first pregnancy at 5 weeks and 5 days u/s did not even show a yolk sack but 2 days later we saw a heartbeat. A day makes a HUGE difference at this early stage.

Lily and Helen have some good advice! There is all the reason in the world to be positive. Yay for the Heparin! If you have any questions about it, let me know. I think I mentioned it the other day, but def put some ice on the place you're going to inject for a minute or so. It numbs the area pretty well so you hardly feel the shot. (and never rub the area after you take the shot. I always put the ice back on after the shot and put a slight bit of pressure and held it there for a couple of minutes.) Good luck! This will be such a great help for your baby to make it all the way to full term! xx

Yep, my scan at 5 weeks 6 days showed no heartbeat or fetal pole, and here I am with my 4 month old daughter on my lap! So one day/week can make a MASSIVE difference! EVERYTHING is crossed for you!

Thanks guys - I feel so much better!! I felt so doom and gloom afterwards and thought I might have a blighted ovum or something. They wanted to do my next scan in 10 days time but I insisted 1 week - there is no way I can wait 10 days!!! Thanks for the advice on the heparin Sherri - I have to do my first shot tonight and I'm a bit nervous. Will definitely use the ice! Love you guys xxx

No heartbeat at 6w6d does not generally mean it is over. My scan showed no fetal pole at 5w6d. At 7w4d we had a fetal pole, but no heartbeat. We finally had a heartbeat at 8w5d. It is more than understandable you are worried. I wish you best of luck for a healthy full term pregnancy.

My 5w6d scan with my last one showed no heartbeat, but she's a perfectly happy 18 mo now! You are almost certainly not having a blighted ovum, because you saw the yolk sac! The yolk sac is a sign of a healthy pregnancy, it does not occur in BOs (that was what comforted me while I had to wait 2 weeks after that scan). Also, your hcg is way high - usually with BOs doubling times vary and they don't rise as fast. I'm sure with your next scan you will see a beautiful little one with a flicker!

my ivf specialist told us 5 weeks 6 days is definitely too early to tell. don't lose hope yet. apparently even a couple of days can apparently make a huge difference!!! crossingy fingers in a work you see a beautiful little hb. I know the waiting will be killing you xx

I agree with all the ladies above! Hang in there! I know the coming week will drag, but great news is right around the corner!!!! We are all thinking and praying for you and your little bean!

don't worry about that..this exact same thing happened to me when I was pregnant with Malik..not all machines can detect a heartbeat on such an early stage..so b positive and keep ur hopes up..I'm sure the next one will b great!

Praying for you and lil one. I'm sure everything will be just fine but I know we all understand the worry. I really wished I could take that away from you so you can relax and ejoy. I know you will once you learn and are able to see that everything is going to be ok. Sending you big hugs!! :)

5w6d seems so early!! If you can wait the 10 days they suggested (I know it's impossible) then at least at your next scan you will have the definitive result (which I know is going to be a strong steady hb). I promised myself the next time I get pg I will wait until at least 8weeks for the ultrasound because I have heard stories of women even at 6weeks and 5 or 6 days haven't seen a hb and still went on to have healthy babies. I will be thinking about you and praying for you. You were in my prayers last night at Mass (ash Wednesday).

Thanks so much everyone, just reading your notes has made me feel a lot better and I realise now that it is very early and a day or two can really make a difference when it's this small. I'm also glad to hear about blighted ovums not usually having a yolk sac - that made me feel very reassured! I know what you mean about waiting till you're further along before having the first ultrasound. I wanted to wait till I was about 7 weeks this time but unfortunately my clinic wanted to make sure the pregnancy was in the right place and there was a yolk sac before they let me have the heparin. So they requested for me to have the ultrasound yesterday - otherwise I would have waited because I know how stressed I get. Thanks again to you all and also for holding me in your prayers xx

I so agree with everyone else - there is still so much room for hope and I am certain that you will get great news next week. take care and hang in there

I haven't read through everyone else's comments, so I'm sure the basics have already been covered. I will say that my doctor didn't do an ultrasound with my last pregnancy - after my miscarriage - until I was around 7 weeks because she didn't want false worry if there wasn't a heartbeat, etc. yet. I know it's impossible, but try not to worry too much. My fingers will stay crossed that this is finally your time! :)

I was just looking through my old journal and realised I actually saw Ruby's heartbeat a 6 weeks, 2 days - It was only changed to 6 weeks because of her measurement. So really my scan yesterday was 3 days before hers not 1 day. Feeling better :)

This is why I like to document everything! lol

I was 5 weeks and a couple days with my last scan and all they seen was the Gsac. Hang in there! I know easier said then done.

it took 6weeks 5 days before we saw it all....its true everyone is different! keep us posted

I pray that you will see your little bean with that little heart beat! Don't give up.
