Really worried about supply!

Feb 23, 2013 - 8 comments

Chloe is a little over 5 weeks old and it feels like she is CONSTANTLY going through a growth spurt, she's cluster feeding constantly, and she'll attempt to eat off from both sides and fuss while at them, usually I can get her to eat about 10-15 minutes before she gets so frustrated and doesn't want to anymore, and even then I'll put my hand on her cheek to see if she's still hungry and snap at it like she's starving and start crying, I'm drinking mothers milk tea, and I know her eating constantly is the best way to boost my supply but I don't think it's increasing to her demands. What do I do? I don't want to supplement but I can't let her starve in this process. Any input :(?

I'll also add, I've supplemented a few times (probably 2-3 since birth while we were out in public, 2 ozs each time) and she does fine relatching to the nipple. What if I let her nurse off both sides til she won't anymore, then pump, so my breasts are empty, and supplement for her so she's not starving? I don't know what to do! :(

I'm sorry you seem to be having trouble! I really wish I could help but I can't. As I've never been able to breast feed any of my babies. I wish you the best of luck though!

have you tried fenagreek ? i dont know if I spelled that right . but it is a herbal suppliment like mother's milk tea . Maybe if you pump 15 mins before feeding her then feed her from breast then give her pumped milk after it would up your supply ? Just thinking Ive only been able to ebf for 5 months then my kids all get teeth and its too painful for me to nurse . Good Luck hopefully you get a increase in milk .

I had a similar issue with my daughter, but it wasn't my supply.  It was that she was getting only fore milk, and no hind milk.  The lactation consultant I had advised me to pump off some milk first, before feeding her, so that the letdown was already there before feeding her, and then to feed her on the same side at least twice before switching sides.

Do you have any l.c's you could work with until you get it figured out?

As long as she is gaining 1 to 2oz a day she's fine. Prairie was like that for almost 3 weeks straight (5-8 weeks) especially in the evenings between 5pm til midnight or so. I also found out she didn't like the cradle hold AT ALL! She would eat for a few min. than get frustrated & start shaking her head back and forth and crying. I finally learned to do the football hold when she was a week old and it's the ONLY position she eats in...pretty sure it saved our bf relationship. So maybe try a different position?  A slow let down might also be the reason she is getting angry. My left boob has a slower letdown and flow and there are times when Prairie refuses to eat from it and only wants the right side (which is why my right boob is bigger now! lol). During the day you can try pumping for 5 min. before a feeding to get the milk flowing and then once she gets older and more efficient that shouldn't be much of a problem. Best of luck!

I never tried a different position! But I will try pumping before feeding her, the past few feedings she's acted fine. I think she is going through a phase where she's doing it, maybe another growth spurt already? She's sleeping a LOT so I hope so!
