total thyroidectomy

Mar 25, 2008 04:49PM - 2 comments

Heelo, I need help after total thyroidectomy!!!   I had it almost a month ago and still feeling real bad.  They put me on 100mcg of synthroid.  I'm still real tired, shaky, anxious, heart rate goes up, etc.  I go for my first blood work after the surgery tomorrow and don't know rather to take medicine before or after they draw the blood?????  Sometimes I don't know if the medicine is making me feel that bad or what.  If you are still hyperthroid would you need a increase in medicine or a decrease??  Someone please help!!!!

It could be that your still suffering from thyroid hormone dump.  That's where the body is dumping all stored thyroid hormones after thyroid surgery - that could explain the hyper symptoms.  It doesn't matter when you take your meds in regards to your lab work - Synthroid is very slow acting.   If you are hyperthyroid on your tests tomorrow they may decrease your meds or just "wait and see" for another month.

The dose of generic L-thyroxine is selected using the rate 1.6 micrograms per kilogram of the patints weight, as a bace rule.
the people after TT may need T3and T4 hormone replacements, not just T4 (I believe I am correct here)
The TSH test is most accurate early in the morning (same as for blood glucose).
