Upset, mean dentist....

Apr 03, 2008 11:06AM - 2 comments

I went to the dentist today to have a molar pulled instead of having it caped. I've had another pulled before but by a different dentist. He started off by telling me having this tooth pulled could cause spontaneous abortion(miscarriage). He then numbs the area, usually when they start to poke you they will tell you..no not him. He jabs the needle into my tooth and I start balling, it hurt so bad. He lets the area get numb, then comes back in and starts to pull the tooth out. It was so painful and so much pressure I wanted to scream. It felt like he was breaking my jaw off. He gets the tooth out and tells me in the process of pulling the tooth he broke the one in front of it.......................WTH!? I know this can happen but damnit why did it happen to me. He says he wants to pull that one now too. I said no, give me my pain killers and let me leave. He said I'm not giving you anything just take Tylenol... MY OB gave him permission to prescribe me Tylenol 3, and he said no just take Tylenol like you do for a headache. ..........................................................UGH I AM SO MAD. My entire mouth hurts now I am worried about the baby.
Why are some people so mean? I am so upset right now.

Dentists have always, in the past 20 years or so abolutely HATED to do extractions.  They want $$$ that comes from the work on the tooth and the cap.  I had one of my daughter's rear teeth removed when she was about 11, and the dentist treated me like the scummiest mother on earth for doing this instead of having work done on the tooth.  Now, years later, her teeth look great, She didn't need that tooth or work done on it.  but I'll never forget that dentist's reaction and how he looked at me with such disgust and scorn.  You should listen to your OB and tell him that the dentist wouldn't prescribe the Tylenol 3, and discuss what went on at the dentist's office.  Your OB may prescribe the Tylenol 3 for you, under the circumstances.  I would also think about filing a claim with the American Dental Association (or whatever it is called).  Not to file a claim for damages (unless it becomes necessary if your mouth keeps hurting and the broken tooth is going to be a costly repair) but just to report his behavior and and the fact that he broke a tooth.

I think that the Dentist was kind of hoping you would opt to do the most expensive route. I totally agee with mdbrown25. Lets see from personal experience, I had the option to pull one of my molars after my filling was lose and the roots intact, but not much else. I could of spent 150 to pull it (mind you no insurance). But, ended up getting a rootcanal on five roots! a metal post, then a crown. Lots of money.... so do not feel bad. I had to do it over I maybe would of yanked it. But, it was a molar in the front area of my smile.
