I find it hard to believe that a doctor would tell someone with Panic Disorder to drink alcohol... or to self-medicate like that. Especially to aid sleep. Psychological disorder + self-medicating w/ an addictive drug sounds like a recipe for addiction to me.

I'm not a doctor. But from what is generally available on the web, alcohol is a very poor sleep aid according to a lot of studies as it interferes with healthy sleep patterns.

Heya Sam, hope you're doing ok.

Abuse of anything is bad. But avoiding all alcohol as if it were crack cocaine doesn't make sense. If your friend has no self control at all, or a very addictive personality, then I'd worry.  However, a glass of red wine in the evening can be very good for relaxing and general good health.
We evolved to take advantage of alcohol. We used to encounter it in fallen fruit etc and in moderate amounts does us no harm.
Jesus encouraged his followers to drink wine in moderation, even made it for them.

I hope this explains my point of view rather than just doing a google search for you. Your friends doctor may have had good reasons for giving that advice - at the same time, he should have explained those reasons to your friend so she understood.

I have a friend who won't take any pills for any reason, even pain, and I don't agree with him at all.

Take Care,
Corum.
