Can LATISSE Really Make Eyelashes Longer, Fuller, and Darker?  Absolutely, Yes.

May 10, 2009 02:51PM - 11 comments

At first I was a little skeptical about how prescription eyelash growing solution LATISSE would be received out in the general population.  I have been using the exact same solution, as an eyedrop called LUMIGAN, to treat glaucoma for about 10 years.  You see, it has this unusual side effect of making eyelashes longer and darker.  It was only recently that the ophthalmic drug company Allergan, decided to use this long known side effect of bimatoprost 0.03% solution (known as the glaucoma drug LUMIGAN) to create LATISSE to be marketed to our increasingly appearance driven society.  LATISSE is applied to the upper eyelashes once a day with a special brush and after several weeks when the effect begins, the dose is usally tapered down quite a bit.  Now for those on the cutting edge of beauty, they have one more weapon in their arsenal.  It's a lot work to stay beautiful, especially for those in the television and entertainment industries where your face and figure can have a big effect on your paycheck.  And, hey if you're not a movie star but want to look like one - more power to you.
Anyway, I wanted to let you know that this product really does work.  Early results with LATISSE with my patients and from other doctors I know, confirms my belief.  It works very well and this stuff is the real deal - but understand that it will not work on everyone.  I estimate that about 20% of people might not get much response and about 5% may have to stop the product due to irritation, itching or redness of the lids or eyes.  Please read the package labeling carefully, since this product has the potential to cause redness of the eyelids and eyes and may have to potential to change iris color to a darker, more brownish shade.  I have seen all of the above side effects with the glaucoma drop version, but LATISSE is applied only to the upper lashes (not the eye) and the dose is much, much lower and is tapered off significantly after a few months.  The incidence of LATISSE side effects is actually rather low but be on the lookout especially for eyelid and eye redness.

Good Luck with your eyelashes.  If you get a chance look at Brooke Shields' eyelashes on the LATISSE web site (really awesome photos -  truly remarkable.)  By the way, I have no financial interest in Allergan and I am not a paid consultant.

I'm so glad you wrote about this product!  I JUST read an ad today. I, too, was skeptical -- very!  Brooke Shields does look amazing and she has a certain credibility in my book.

The thing which seals the deal for me is that it is an Allergan product, now that you bring it up.  As it so happens, I used to be the research coordinator for a surgeon who used Allergan devices and materials as part of FDA studies, and their research and development was just top-notch. I was never paid by them or an employee.  I merely coordinated the surgeon's studies as a principle investigator.  He used other study sponsors, as well, that were equally good.

It gives me confidence to try this beauty product having your endorsement, too, having seen its effects.  Thanks for sharing your thoughts.  My 45 year-old eyes could use all the help they can get.  I'm sure my insurance wouldn't pay for this, so I'll have to look into the cost...

Thanks again!  Take care!

Thanks for sharing this information. It bugs me that my boyfriend's eyelashes are thicker and prettier than mine. His eyelashes rub against his glasses and mine are barely visible, even with mascara. I will definitely look into Latisse now that I know that's not a marketing gimmick. Thanks again!

My Question about Latisse.....say I use it for a couple of months and then quit, because the medication is pricey for me.
Will the lovely eyelashes I grow from Latisse disappear and fall out when I discontinue using the medication?????
Can Dr. Kutryb answer this question for me???????????????

Hi.  I am hoping for you insight and advice.  I have very light blue eyes and have been using Latisse for 7 weeks and LOVE the results.  I did not know about the darkening of the iris side effect.  As soon as I read this, I discontinued using it immediately.  I just do not want to take the chance.  Can you please tell me if I am officially in the clear since I stopped using it and haven't had any color change?  Or, could my color still morph after discontinuing the product?  Thank you.  I'm nervous:-(

This is for the other people who come here for Latisse information.  I am a 48-year-old woman.  Although my eyelashes are very dark and have not changed with age, they have always been fairly short and sparse.  I requested Latisse from the plastic surgeon who performed scar revision surgery on my leg.  I pay $120 per bottle, which I hear is about average.  I have been using Latisse for close to 11 weeks now.  After struggling with the brushes supplied with the product (scratchy, hard to control) I started using a smaller, softer natural hair brush that works for me.  I sterilize it after every use by dipping it in rubbing alcohol, blotting it dry and storing it in a little tube.  You must keep it clean to avoid the chance of infection.  (Allergan wants you to use two separate brushes in order to avoid the possibility of transferring any infection from one eye to the other.)  My results are:  4 weeks: slight growth at outer corners of lashes.  8 weeks: significantly longer lashes but not really thicker.  10-11 weeks: lashes are becoming a little thicker.  My eyelashes were already dark so I don't see any change there.  The lashes used to curl very little but now they look like I've used an eyelash curler.  The tips actually touch my sunglass lenses now - annoying, but a small price to pay for vanity.  I've had to back off on the mascara because it's almost too much!  I will continue to use it.

I've been using Latisse for about 11 weeks now, and yes, it absolutely works! My eyelashes are much longer and are also getting thicker, as well as darker. I have had no adverse side effects (I have blue eyes and they have remained exactly the same color, I've had no redness or irritation at all). Very easy to use, but as many people have recommended, I don't use the brushes they provide since they don't work as well as a good eyeliner brush. I was puzzled that my bottle lasted over 2 months when it says it lasts about 1 month, but I read on another site someone saying the same thing, so I think the value is better than expected. (It seems that the average price is $120 a bottle which would boil down to $60 per month until after 14 weeks when you cut back to twice a week to maintain the lashes, and then the monthly cost will be even cheaper!) I get mine from Kaiser so it costs me about $106 per bottle. I highly recommend it!

I started using latisse about 13 weeks ago and i love my results. At first it was really frustrating because i wasn't seeing the results i expected but i guess it takes a while for it to kick into you hair cycle. After weeks not only did i see a difference but my friends as well as strangers saw it as well. if you go onto my dr's website then you can see my before and afters. I buy it from Pousti Plastic Surgery and they are having a special on it so i bought it for 100 for one bottle or 2 for 180. One bottle has lasted me 3 months bc i use a different applicator, i think the ones it comes with soak up a lot of the solution. So if you do buy it then get an applicator from sally's or something so you can save money.

Latisse is working great - if you want to get it a great price as well from a physician reviewed site - try www.latisse.bz - 89 per bottle.
