I just came back from my psychiatrist. Things were very bad as regards the dystonic spasms. He allowed me to increase the ginkgo (from a standard clinical study on tardive dyskinesia as are all the treatments I am on such as rhodiola and Piracetam). The Namenda was not a possibility as it would interact with glycine and also could cause psychosis as he himself stated. The new muscle relexant was working on dystonic spasms but had a short half life. I just took the ginkgo. Here's the interesting part. I am eating a hamburger. I had dysphagic choking spasms before. I can communicate well now. I was in a full state of tardive dysmentia. I had no idea what was going on. I just looked at the prints I have up there including the "match girl". They can set off dissociative states and dysphagic choking spasms just by looking at them (as do some standard distressing photos such as the hungry children on the charitable ads here) which is tardive dysphrenia. They didn't. I have worked with the system and now we are understanding treatment for 3 neurological disabilities that were not known before. As for the emotional aspects of the "match girl" (maternal figure withdrawing emotional contact) well my mother (and she understands I include her in posts and accepts it) is going to start treatment. That is Lovaza. That's an experimental mood stabilizer. So the discussion of "setting emotional boundaries" and "staying factual" will be carried over to her psychiatrist. I'll be out of the picture.
As for "factual" well in speaking to my psychiatrist he returned from the conference as did all psychiatrists of note. Would not post anything confidential (without speaking) but the good thing is research continues on many levels on glutamate antagonists and if one particular medication doesn't make it that does't mean another will. There are three new treatment modalities in study for antipsychotics (which you can read anywhere) and the glutamate antagonists are the most promising. As for my case study well let's just say it is progressing further and right now I am the first person to have been identified to have made a full recovery from schizoaffective disorder with glycine and the first to have worked with the system to identify new treatments and find an understanding about what tardive psychosis, tardive dysphrenia and tardive dysmentia. But my recovery will be a "finding" not a fact as it must apply to other people. But research on new treatments is something everyone is interested in even the pharmaceutical industry would like a better safer product. Everyone wins. And as for "having the mental recovery I did without the neurological disabilities" no one disagrees. As to where I stand. Let's just say far back enough to allow the researchers the room and authority they deserve to carry on the good work they do. I trust them and yes new treatment modalities are on the horizon and my recovery is on the forefront...

Good for you! My dr assures me that there are new anti psychs in the pipeline as you have said. I certainly hope so. Not that I will be able to afford them but it's nice to know. Glad you are doing well ( an understatement I am sure). Here's to your continuing improvements!

Health care reform in regards to medication coverage is certainly something that is being addressed that can be discussed openly. As well there will be a new Commissioner of the FDA. I would believe that making new and innovative options as regards medications once they are FDA approved be affordable to people would be an issue that will be addressed. One thing that's important to remember with any health care plan that you have is if you are denied coverage for a particular medication appeal the denial. Many of my recent medications (apart from the experimental medications of which coverage does not exist) for the dystonic spasms such as Zofran and Flexaril had to go through an appeals process and once they did I had full coverage including retroactive. The link I've put in posts for independent living centers is one place to find out about healthcare coverage appeals (and a variety of disability advocacy issues):
http://www.ilru.org/html/publications/directory/index.html
and if one has that form of coverage (such as myself) the Medicare Rights Center can be of great assistance.
